Czar's gold treasure found on Baikal Lake bed

Moscow, Aug 31 (PTI) The legendary gold treasure of Russia's last Czar could
have been found by Mir-2 mini submarine on the bed of the world's deepest
fresh water lake Baikal in Siberia, according to reports.

The legends say gold estimated at 1,600 tons and worth billions of dollars,
was lost after the train of White Admiral Alexander Kolchak, who had
declared himself ruler of Siberia during Civil War plunged into the lake
from the Krugobaikalskaya line at Cape Polovinny.

"The Russian Mir-2 mini-sub has found a number of shiny metal objects on the
bottom of Lake Baikal that could be the legendary Czar's gold lost during
the Russian civil war," RIA Novosti reported quoting the Fund for the
    Protection of Lake Baikal.

    No kidding.

I got a kick out of this:

Explorers attempted to grab hold of the shiny objects with the mini-sub’s manipulator arm but failed due to the loose gravel on the lake’s floor.
Failed due to loose gravel ? The manipulators only work on a solid surface ? Heck, get Odyssey in there. They can pick-up coins from the sandy bottom.

As always, who knows what the real story is ?

Man, have you ever seen this Lake ? It is awesome. Mountains underneath. The water in past years was so clean you could drink it without purifying it. But pollution from industry has contaminated parts of the lake.

This area is so ancient it is a great metal detecting site all around.
