The Scotch in the America's

The Scots were planning to have a settlementon the coast of the America's and well on the Darien penuncila. The Scots paid the new settlement the greatest compliment they knew ; they called the place ,,Caledonia ,, and the town ,, New Edinburgh ,, .The reason for the settlement was to get to cargoes of Nicaragua Wood . The Scots started to make the wilderness into a fit place to live . To begin with most of the colonists were ordered to remain on board the ships while gangs of forty men from each vessel went ashore with axes , ropes and saws to clear away the underbrush and put up temporary shelters for the invalids who had fallen ill on the voyage . Then the sick were landed ; tents , furniture , and other tackle were unloaded and finally the longboats ferried ashore the main body of colonists for their first tasks in their new home . The immediate priority , the council believed , was the construction of a fort at the tip of the penunsula because there were rumors that both the French and the Spanish were considering sending expeditions to dislodge the intruding Scots . The fort that was erected was called ,,Fort St. Andrew ,, . During their stay a few ships were entering the harbor . The first large vessel entering was the ,, Rupert Prize ,, . an English warship operating out of Jamaica . Her captain , Richard Long , was officially surveying the coast for the wrecks of Spanish plate ships which might be worth salvage . The Scots had brought a lot of common goods from Scotland in order to barter these for more valuable local goods . The local merchands however only wanted cash for their materials . The captain of a French ship the ,, Maurepas ,, which had collected a vast amountn of Spanish loot along the coast agreed to carry the colony's dispatches to a place where they could be forwardedto Edinburgh ( Scotland ) .

Re: The Scotch in the America's

But .... the French captain turned out to be a fool , and he insisted on setting out into Caladonia's narrow channel in the teeth of a fresh gale and with his crew half drunk . A Mr. Pennyccook saw the danger and chased after his ship in a cockboat , managing to catch up with her just as the Maurepas was being blown broadside onto the rocks . Pennycook got a line aboard the French vessel and towed her into a small bay where she was still exposed to the fury of the gale but could at least put down her anchors . Then Pennycook sent back to fetch more anchors and cables , while he himself went aboard the ,, Maurepas ,, to try to persuade her captain to delay . But before the English cockboat could return the gale freshened , and the Frenchman's cables snapped . The ,, Maurepas ,, was driven ashore amid pounding waves and became a total loss. Her captain and chief mate were rescued , but twenty -four of the fifty-four crewmen were drowned . Pennycook survived only by throwinh himself into the sea and swimming ashore The loss of the ship was the worst single accident that had befallen the colony ; its impact was all the more depressing since it took place on Christmas Eva . The wrecksite of the ,,Maurepas ,, can be pinpointed and it is likely that a lot of treasure is still there . The colonist had more to do than to dive aftertreasure they could not eat . Cornelius

Yes, Cornelius, that's an interesting (and intriguing story). I believe the French captain's name was Duvivier Thomas and his vessel wrecked on the rocks on the west side of the bay--offered for those who may go after her. The year of the incident was 1698.

Another 'teaser': "They were accompanied by a Dutch ship sheltering from the Spaniards and a French trading ship, the Maurepas, which sank after hitting a rock near the mouth of the bay, laden with merchandise and 60,000 pieces of eight in gold and silver."

Don . Be careful you may start a run on the ,,Maurepas ,, . After all she is not too far away from the our Florida area . The 60.000 pieces of eight will do it anytime ! Cornelius
