The Scotch in the America's
The Scots were planning to have a settlementon the coast of the America's and well on the Darien penuncila. The Scots paid the new settlement the greatest compliment they knew ; they called the place ,,Caledonia ,, and the town ,, New Edinburgh ,, .The reason for the settlement was to get to cargoes of Nicaragua Wood . The Scots started to make the wilderness into a fit place to live . To begin with most of the colonists were ordered to remain on board the ships while gangs of forty men from each vessel went ashore with axes , ropes and saws to clear away the underbrush and put up temporary shelters for the invalids who had fallen ill on the voyage . Then the sick were landed ; tents , furniture , and other tackle were unloaded and finally the longboats ferried ashore the main body of colonists for their first tasks in their new home . The immediate priority , the council believed , was the construction of a fort at the tip of the penunsula because there were rumors that both the French and the Spanish were considering sending expeditions to dislodge the intruding Scots . The fort that was erected was called ,,Fort St. Andrew ,, . During their stay a few ships were entering the harbor . The first large vessel entering was the ,, Rupert Prize ,, . an English warship operating out of Jamaica . Her captain , Richard Long , was officially surveying the coast for the wrecks of Spanish plate ships which might be worth salvage . The Scots had brought a lot of common goods from Scotland in order to barter these for more valuable local goods . The local merchands however only wanted cash for their materials . The captain of a French ship the ,, Maurepas ,, which had collected a vast amountn of Spanish loot along the coast agreed to carry the colony's dispatches to a place where they could be forwardedto Edinburgh ( Scotland ) .
