Fire grates on wooden ships?

Did old wooden ships use "fire grates" did they just have a fire for cooking or did the captain have a fire in his cabin? found a old broken fire grate with heavy crud. I will try and post a photo later, it does seem a bit small for cooking the ships meals on.

some ships had fireplaces for cooking and heat, or maybe it was cargo. the book underwater dig shows a fireplace on a ship called the defense.
