Help with research, Santo Domingo

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find out the names of the vessels that got wrecked by a hurricane in 1553 in Santo Domingo commanded by Christopher Colombus (grandchild)
3 naos and a patache out side of the port and 16 merchant vessels in the mouth of the river.......Any information that can be shared will be really appreciated

In "New World Shipwrecks" By R.Marx it says; nephew...but in "Armada Espanola" by Fernandez Duro it says; grandchild....
If you do a little research in the internet you will find the right information Cristobal Colon father of Diego Colon father of Luis Colon and Cristobal Colon grandchilds of Cristobal Colon......

In 1553,“San Lucar” galeon of Alvaro de Bazan, maestre Lorenzo Garcia, loaded with leathers and sugar, lost going out the barra of Santo Domingo.
“San Bartolomeu”, Captain Juan Rodriguez 120 Tx, flota de A.S de Aviles, Martial de Vollagana from Puerto Rico, from Santo domingo to Spain, se perdio en el Albali junto a Coria (Monte Cristi). Divers recovered her cargo and gold, silver and brides.
I don't have the names of the other ships but you can probably find it if you use the following sources and bibliography

What a coincidence! I have been living in Santo Domingo for many years now, although foreigner by birth. I am professional diver and underwater archaeologist. After five years of intesive research, looking for documents in Sevilla Archive and diving in various shipwreck locations in DR, last year I published the book "Hidden and Sunken Treasures in Dominican Republic". You can still buy it or in Museo de Casas Reales or in the book shop Thesaurus in Lincoln and Sarasoga. I am running here small underwater research company as well.

I know about hurricane of 1553 and lost ships. The mouth of River Ozama in Santo Domingo is full of sunken ships but.... Forget diving there from many reasons. One of them are local Dominican permits. Believe me, I know something about it. I would not recommend you just to take scuba tank and plunge for adventure in these waters.

Anyway, buddy, you seem to have the same life passion as me, which is underwater history and treasure hunting. Hello Emma,

I congratulate you! It is very good research work you have done but I would like to discuss one item with you. According to my own archive based on paid information from Sevilla Archive, the captain Juan Rodriguez was master of nao "La Salvadora" and not of "San Bartolomeu". The strange thing is that "La Salvadora" was lost in the storm in sight of Montecristi coast exactly in 1553. Nao was full of silver, gold, gems and jewelry from Inca and Maya Empire but unlike "San Bartolomeu", this nao has never been found.

If you want, I can give you even reference of books and chapters from Sevilla Archive dealing with this particular ship master. There are even declarations of few survivers of "La Salvadora" in Sevilla file.

Yesterday I talked with Chris by phone. I was just on my way back from diving trip on the southern island with group of cave divers from Europe. I have been diving with them from 27th of December both on the northern and southern coast. Lot of interesting things. I will meet Chris by the end of the week to tell him details and some news.
