There is a very good reason they aren't being used today. They are an accident waiting to happen. Rapid changes to depth and having your mask ripped off by current are never a good thing! Sure, SOME people can do it safely but it takes someone with experience and a very careful boat captain.

I have used these and you spend half your time looking over your shoulder for sharks, or your face mask gets ripped-off. This enclosed method allows you some security from predators, plus you can have communications with the boat. Not dangerous if run properly.

Re: U/W Towable Sled
Ed,
The Sub i have was made by havas/scuba pro in the 60's.It wont be set up for towing(unless it breaks down), I plan on doing a complete restoration on it this winter.Right now im welding up a stand for it sorta like a rotisserie so i can get to all parts of it to re glass and gelcoat, plus have to add a 100lb thrust motor to it.It originally had a 1/4 horse motor in it.The controls will have to be rebuilt as well as the auto buoyancy system. There are pics of the sub on my facebook album and some here on tnet in my profile somewhere.
