in the book * funnel of gold a quip in it said * -- De Valle was no fool and when he visited Jamacia that he already knew about the taking of a English prize vessel for illegal trading * - who's captain in a effort to avoid it being seized told them that the governor was a 25% owner -- so Valle knew that for giving "protection" to the illegal trading vessels and silver "fishing / looting" vessels that a 25% cut was due to Hamilton upon their return to Jamacia.

to be able to "openly loot" (fish) the Spanish silver wrecks and come into port freely and spend your loot freely not have to cover up what one was doing and to have "official "govt commissions" could mean the difference between a jail term and being hung as "pirates" if caught by the Spanish * many folks would gladly give a 25% cut if the " official paper work" would save their hides from hanging.

note the griffon was picking up payment for "past fremch escort vessels" that had helped protect past treasure fleets as well as carrying a French ambassador --note the 14 year 1701 to 1714 war was all about the "king of FRANCE taking over the kingdom of SPAIN as well (when the Spanish king died without heirs) and trying to be the king of BOTH at the same time " the other European powers would not allow that much power to sit in one set of hands and said he had to give up one of the "crowns" --he said "no' and the war was on--- so during the war they were not allies but in effect were ruled by the same king --the war ended by the king finally agreeing to yield and he gave up the "French crown" to kin folk of his choosing --which post war of course were his allies.

I detect the history: I've visited archives up & down the entire US East Coast, Bahamas, Jamaica, Kew, The Hague, etc. Have yet to go to Seville or S.American archives.

While it's true that it could be argued that France was in control of both empires (which is why the Allies protested), Philippe (Louis' grandson) was on the throne for the duration of the war & remained on the throne afterward, so there was no switch made from 1701 forward. In 1714, nothing changed except that Philippe lost all hope of gaining back Flanders & other small Spanish interests during his reign. The entire war was fought in vain & it was one of the bloodiest ever at that point.

This is a minor point, but I disagree that Hamilton "definitely" had a stake in any and/or all the ships that went to/ near " the Spanish camps" as Valle put it. From everything I have read, practically every merchant vessel going up the Bahama Channel was dropping by the Spanish wreck sites and snooping about.

True. Everyone wanted a piece of the wrecks. My reference to "those ships" was only those in Jennings' fleet. Hamilton did invest in Barsheba, Mary & Eagle + a few others I think (going on memory here).

The foregoing event seems to have occurred sometime in 1711-1712...probably the same Griffon, probably the same Chevalier de A'ire. More confirmation that Griffon was a big, fast 44 gun French warship, apparently "lent" to the merchants of Vera Cruz as convoy protection.

Seeker you are too good! The rock is what he detected. The quarter is just for size comparison. I know you knew that.

I've been told it is ballast stone and could have Silver or Gold impregnated. Gentleman said they did this to hide some of the value of the load they were carrying...
