found an old wreck spot on the shore line area by it ifound several iron items and also a couple black lumpy items that are NOT silver coins (dang) one fellow told me they might be coal--another said pitch tar used to seal the layers between the hulls inner and outer --found an olive jar shard at the site too. well have any of you had pitch (TAR) ring up as metal?

No Ivan....as far as I know, "pitch" contains no elements that would register on a metal detector.
But..I learned early on in the emergency medical field......."Never say never" if you do it'll bite you in the butt. Who knows what someone mixed into pitch, right?

Actually, sailors used to hide coins in barrels of pitch tar. Are you sure there might not be a coin or two in those clumps?

Ivan just a thought but there could be something inside the tar like maybe a 1 escudo coin ::)that is causing the MD to sing.
I would have the chunk X-Rayed.
