More like rocky.

That's what I first thought, but all the nearby rocky and shallows are marked with xxx's the depth in fathoms?
Andmthismismthe only "marker" with amdate next to it?

Weird?

Also,,this is on a a maritime chart, not a map! Sorry!

I believe that the map's origin (Country) would have a large bearing on what any abbreviations and/or acronyms mean. If you can devulge this information, then if may lead to solving what the "rky" abbreviation means.

It an Enlish Admiralty chart dated 1790 - hence I was confused about the "1740 position approx" note!

Hey BVI, I would plumb for rocky seabed that is thought of as " no hazard to shipping" charts have seabed abbreviations all over them etc so my guess for what it's worth would be rocky, sorry buddy for a negative opinion...... The xxx's are coral reefs near the surface I believe, well they are on the charts I have here

in the very old seafaring days --sea charts often had "bottom conditions" listed upon them --soundings were done with weights with hollow bottoms that had wax placed in them --to bring up bottom samples as a aid in navigation

I had it pretty much confirmed it means "rocky".
I was told this was probably an assumption by the ships crew as the area was just outside the area being surveyed.

I've been looking at these charts since I was a kid. Ivan's right on. It's rocky bottom.
