I understand that copper plating was sometimes used on old wooden ships to protect the hull.

I'm finding an area with lot's of thin copper pieces. Is this the same style or thickness that was once used?

-or is there a more common source for the thin copper buried in the old sediment?

Copper, due to electrolysis, may have a short life span.

Salt water is not friendly to certain metals.

Lead, on the other-hand, is more stable.
