Platinum and Palladium are naturally occurring within copper ore deposits. It wasn't until the late 18th-early 19th century that they figured out how to extract the precious metals from the copper. Anything that assays out at 1% platinum is worth smelting and extracting for the precious metal....I hear tell that some old cannons assay out at better than 3%. So an 8,000 lb Spanish Culverin assays at 2% Platinum, so the yield would be 160 lbs. platinum m.o.l., or roughly 2,343. Troy Oz. at today's spot price of $990.oz equals $2,319,793. Maybe that is why everybody in the photos is so Happy ! There are a number of refining companies that will do an assay for approx. $75. Drill one little !/4" hole and get a couple grams of bronze for the test..... I understand that this is Especially true for Copper mined in Cuba in the 16th-17th century, and the raw slag chunks were often transported in the galleons packed right down in the cribs with the ballast. That's part of the reason why bronze cannons fetch such a big price.....that's why they call it call it TREASURE HUNTING ! Rico
