a 790 foot cargo ship --the EL FARO .. left Jacksonville , FL bound for San Juan PR -- wound up directly in the teeth of the hurricane .. it appears to have sank --one of the two lifeboats was found smashed and empty --a life ring was found with the vessels name on it and a body in a survival suit has been found -- there is still a 43 man life boat and 4 -17 man life rafts unaccounted for --so a miracle can occur --please pray that the other 32 members might be found alive .. or at least found for the sake of their families ..there were a total of 28 Americans and a 5 man Polish "work crew" onboard at the time -- many of the unlicensed crewmembers were from my local (Jacksonville .FL) SIU union hall that I used to ship out of before I was "forced' into medical retirement a few years back --if not I very well could have been on it as the run was one that I often took....why they knowingly took a 40 year old vessel into a class 3 -4 hurricane is beyond nuts ...just to keep the company's "on time delivery schedule" at San Juan ?

Ivan I know you were a merchant marine seaman. Right now it doesn't look good for the El Faro. The Coast Guard confirmed that the ship sank. They found one dead crewman and an empty lifeboat. The El Faro had only 2 lifeboats. With all the advanced weather info I can't understand why a cargo ship sailed right into a cat 4 hurricane.

No job, just to keep a company's schedule, is worth the lost of life.
I hope some of these souls survived and will be found.

the search for survivors is over -- all 33 are thought to be dead ... now its just a "ship wreck' investigation ..as to laying blame..

I'm surprised they only found one body in a survival suit, there should be 32 more. No sign of the liferafts, although with 140 mph winds they could be up in a palm tree.

Yup, this hit close to home. Danielle Randolph (second mate) was a friend of my wife's. This was a completely avoidable tragedy...

I knew Jeremy Riehm... he was a good guy.... My heart goes out to his wife Tina, and his kids. Terribly sad for them.
