Taiwan has a rich history... and was under Dutch colonial rule for a period of time... to trade with the Ming Empire and Japan...
The trade through Taiwan was extensive involving the Dutch... The East India Trading Company to be exact...
Tons of conflict and wrecks exist throughout the ages there because of monopoly of the Dutch Formosa.

Do some searches on The Dutch Formosa if interested.
