anyone have an example picture of lead sheathing ? privateer's pictures are they lead? im preety sure i've been picking up small shards of sheathing 2''x4'' at best and copper. not nearly as thick as the ones pictured . very thin like a shredded beer can. but copper.

This is an example of some lead sheeting I have been pulling up at one of my sites. They come in all shapes and sizes.

Re: nails & spikes ?

just about all the small pieces were rolled up in old netting that we cut off the wrecks-larger pieces were still attached to hull.Have some lead sheathing off some other wrecks i will get some pictures of and post.

hi all,
just for interest's sake, the long bolt/spike comes from an american built paddle wheeler which was wrecked in 1855. the spike is 17" long.

Re: nails & spikes ?

Here is an unusual one found by the crew of the Polly L on the Jupiter site. It is about six inches long and as big around as your thumb.

Re: nails & spikes ?

Sheathing or gutter found on Treasure Beach after hurricane Wilma. Some nail heads are still in it.

Re: nails & spikes ?

Are you guys forgetting that sheathing (both lead and copper), and those same nails were also used to hold boxes together....boxes....or chests? It's the same stuff, and it's difficult to tell the difference between corner bracing for boxes, or small peices of hull sheathing for boats.

Here is a nice example of some copper sheathing that Laura and I found.

Re: nails & spikes ?

Here's a few more from an early 1800's vessel. All bronze, but the first stubby one I picked up put a choke on my circulatory system...! thought I was rich for a few seconds! Anyway, you can actually see ring marks on one of em where it was swedged with a washer... kind of like applying a rivet to wood members.
