I researched this one pretty well. This is a classic case of treasure expanding as the tale is told. She was indeed a true ship, wrecked with tons of copper in 1798. There was never any mention of gold at that time. Then nothing is reported on her until the 1880s (80+ years of silence) with amazing stories of millions in gold. And her legendary gold has been reported ever since.

De Braak was salvaged by Sub-Sal in 1986 and her hull raised. The hull was placed in a museum. Many artifacts were found but very few coins. Complete disregard for archaeological research resulted in passage of the Abandoned Shipwreck Act in 1987.

Actually only the starboard side of hull was raised... and was a nighttime salvage where "tickets" were sold to people to watch.

Yeah, Gold is heavier than Copper and artifacts and once she started listing, the Cannons on the Starboard side, slid to the Port side and sealed her fate.
