We have heard for MANY years about how great this "low-alpha" lead was supposed to be and how much it was supposed to be worth. The problem is that nobody could ever find anyone buying it.

A cheaper source of low alpha lead in the amateur radiation detection community is the local roofer that works on historic houses.

I work at a University and can tell you the research budgets usually are long on ingenuity and short on cash.
The local roofer that has been stashing salvaged lead for the last forty years from old buildings is the go to guy
with the researcher or graduate assistants grading and then recasting the lead for their experiments shielding.
