Is it possible to build a sub bottom sonar?

Has anyone tried building a home made sub bottom sonar? I know there are some good home built side scans. I'm thinking maybe using a laptop for the monitor. What other parts would be needed?

Any information appreciated.

Yes but would take some work. While at FAU I worked in the Chirp Sonar Lab where we developed Sub Bottom Profilers (sub bottom sonar.) They can be used to detect mines (boom boom kind) and a surprising number of other things. Attached are a few pics of BOSS Buried Object Scanning Sonar.
