1) in the attached news story, only one of those guys is an actual degreed archaeologist.

2) No mention is given of Doug Armstrong, the man who discovered the French site on Mosquito Lagoon. His recoveries are displayed in the McLarty museum in Sebastian.

"Retreated to a harbor"?? The only navigable "harbor south of "80 miles north of Daytona" is Ponce de Leon Inlet. South of that, at the time the next "harbor" was Ft. Pierce. Matanzas MAY have been navigable at the time. In any case the cape is substantially south of all these locations.

Maybe it's just the reporters misunderstanding, but something don't add up....

In 1988 I investigated in the AGI the history of Ribault and the Frenchmen buried a treasure. I do not remember well where, but it can be Matanzas. Later one of the Frenchmen reached the Azores Islands and was caught. He returned to tell the history of the treasure.

the ill french commander who was left behind by ribault -- was preparing to leave FT Caroline he even got a 50 ton vessel (called the tyger or tiger as we now say it) off of hawkins along with food and 40 sets of shoes in exchange for fresh water and cannons from the fort (which he planned to leave) however rebuilt arrived with supplies and men and took every able bodyin the fort he could find with him to attack the spanish--- the ill camp commander a few people and 4 vessels were left behind most likely the same 4 that the ill commander had before the tyger and two 15 ton pinnacles and one 30 ton other vessel -- when the spanish attacked the camp in masse only a very few survivors made it to the one 30 ton french vessel -- not being able to crew the other vessels they burnt the tyger and two other vessels as they left to prevent the spanish getting them --the record of this is in the ill camp commanders papers that he recorded * (the funnel of gold --petersen)
