Capt MOORE of SUCCESSOR -- pirate under Luis Aurys command Treasure info

MOORE (an american citizen) was the captian of a pirate vessel called the SUCCESSOR --the vessel was fitted out in the river Severn , city of Baltimore , state of Maryland --MOORE worked with Aury using Aury's letters of Maquee from Mexico and Venezula to "cover" his actions against spanish shipping.

on / about Oct 1st, 1817 off of cuba --the SUCCESSOR took the Spanish vessel named ISBELITA headed to Havana , Cuba loaded with slaves --she was owned by Juan Madrazzo* at the time.

Once in control of the vessel they headed her to amelia island, florida ( Luis Aurys island that he took from the spanish) at a "kangaroo court" set up there the vessel was deemed a "war prize" and the vessel and slaves sold off -- a man by the name of WILLIAM BOWEN bought the cargo --95 slaves * and was taking them overland towards the panhandle / florida georgia border area when he got to the area known as the CREEK NATION AREA at a spot known as " THE UNITED STATES AGENCY" he was arrested and the slaves "taken" by a US military patrol as slaves being illegally smuggled according to the 1803 "no farther importation of slaves from africa into america act" --the 95* slaves were taken into georgia and about 2/3 rds of them (about 65) were sold for $40,000 which was placed into the ga state treasury accounts by the govenor -- but 1/3 (27 to 30)of the slaves were not sold but were held by the state (ie the govenor--later the govenor would later turn the remaining slaves over to a free the slaves group for resettlement .)

the vessel ISBELITA was later discovered in CHARLESTON, SC and was arrested and returned to its spanish owner JUAN MADRAZZO * it was at that time he found out about the slaves as well -- so he then filed suit in the US courts for return of his "stolen property" from the state of georgia (ie the slaves or any money made from the sale of them*)

in the court fight BOWEN claimed ownership claiming he bought them from Aury and never meant to bring them into the US but was traveling and went into the "creek area" for safety reasons on the way to west florida --- the courts rejected BOWEN claims ---first being stolen goods Aury could not legally sell them to Bowen (the us courts would not honor Aury claims to the vessels and cargo as being legal prizes)--and second they were in US territory so even if legally gotten they were forfieted to the state of georgia for that reason* also.

the spanish slave owner said his vessel and slaves were taken and brought to florida and the USA without his approval asnd against his wishes ,so why should his property be "forfieted" as he did nothing wrong --the stolen slaves or money gotten for their sell should go to him the"lawful" owner -- some said the slave themselves were in effect "stolen" forced against their will to leave from africa --thus nothing should be paid to the slave owner MADRAZZO and that the slaves should be free and not sold into slavery by the state of georgia.

the case drug on finally getting to the supreme court. which is how we have a record of these events .

I wonder if MOORE is the same william moore (gunner) that fought with Capt Kidd and was killed by Kidd.?*

the important part is it shows that BOWEN did indeed buy the 95 slaves from Aury on amelia island some time in oct of 1817 and since Aury was caught in DEC of 1817 --that means only about 60 days went by --- the 95 slaves would have fetched about $60,000 --- plus Aury was getting a 1/6 th cut of all booty being sold in his port (as duty)--and according to the US Govt reports by state of ga customs folks -- there was a lot of trading going on due to the "bargin" prices Aury's port was offering

reportly Aury was held a month after being taken by US forces and was released with a vessel-- he left broke and was told not to return on pain of death -- reportly he died of a broken neck after falling from a highly spirited horse about 3 years later.

so there was money paid for the slaves and his sales tax (cut)-- and he didn't leave the island with it -- where is it?

I got some very good ideals about the area he would have buried it at * yes he would not have left it on his ships --he had a crew mutiny not too long before coming to amelia island and they nearly killed him in the process --so for that reason I do believe in this case the money would have been close at hand(on land) --where he could keep a "eye" on it ---when US forces showed he fled to avoid capture (smart move they might have just hung him on the spot) --so he either left it buried or took it in flight and buried in along his attempted escape route before his capture -- no doubt if the treasure had been found * and taken by US forces --Aury would have been hung (so he couldn't tell anyone) ---but instead US forces held and released him after trying for almost a month to think of a legal pretext to hang him and not being able to come up with one.--(they finally checked his vessels thru and thru and told him to git and never return on pain of death (if he should return -they would hang him on the spot) Ivan
