Sorry wont work like you think except in limited conditions. The bottom seal needs to be water tight with the wings. Plus wont work at much of an angle due to the wings sticking out of the water.

Been there done that Feb 2013: Fold out wing dam for fluidbed.
I suggest you build a large flair with adjustable pitch and it will do the job

And in regards to the standard Aluminum Stream Sluice - I see what your saying.
The longer the sluice and drop angle - the more the wings are just going to be flapping in the air.

After reading up on your post, this may be for Bazooka BGT's ONLY.. and shallow water situations (again perfect for snipers and minis).
The Mini and Sniper want to be as flat as possible, so the wings may have a chance to effective.
The tail is another question... TBD.

And I also agree that these are only useful in "certain' conditions.
Hence being small and light and easy to set aside, but also not much added weight too if not needed.

I am going tomorrow and I will test and post my findings.

Even with a prospector or miner as long as you can get water on the deck..plugging some holes and making sure as little water as possible goes under the sluice is crucial to getting good flow over the grizzly.

As long as it would not cause it to float down stream, id even suggest a tarp flap that connects the wings to the bottom piece.

Here is my 30" sniper. Kevin can attest to the low water flow that i have to deal with. I can usually dam up enough to get some decent flow without any outside assistance.

Well I got out and put them to the test.
I must say they work wonderfully.
I did not need the bottom tail as depth was only 6-7" avg.

Attched them and placed a few rocks behind them and forgot about em.
No detaching, floating away, no need for added retention to sluice.
Before installing, I had to clear the grizzly every time.
After install, I only had to clear the really big/flat ones.

Quick clean out on the 30" ...(lots of fines to go thru still)



Still need to see what the 24" caught.

Thanks guys. Can't wait to get out again and "test" some more.

They are so light weight and easy to stow, that if you don't need them, no harm in the effort to carry them....just set em aside.
But if you do need them or maybe just the bottom tail, slap it on.

I think this is a viable addition to anyone's field kit if you run a smaller BGT.
And I am officially now selling them.

I've got the perfect conditions for you in upper big T.

This was when I first dropped it in. Dry deck. Ran ok once I got things running. Soon I will need 100% of the stream. I named the big piece "The Bird". Kinda looks like a parrot. Or maybe something else.

So I'm not sure why you needed the wings where you were located?.......

When I built my wings I was looking for a substitute for taking the time and effort of building a wing dam when rocks to build one with were scarce and the water was deep.
Although in certain situations I was really happy with their capability and still keep them in my arsenal for when the need arises.

You are indeed correct G.G.

I think ultimately, there is no way to avoid having to use rocks. Wings or no wings.
But with the wings (yours included), I think you are saving a lot of time being spent filling in all those little gaps between the bigger rocks..
You want to create as good a seal as possible, sides and bottom, and the wings definitely help and speed things up.

In my photos, we were in a heavily used area with many Sluice pockets pre-built from earlier prospectors.
So I just dropped my sluice into one of those pockets and added the wings. no need to fill any gaps.

So just as you say, these need to be looked at as an accessory or tool that can be used when needed.
But not a burden to bring along if not needed.
