I know this thread is old but I wanted to clarify for future references. You man meteal detect on the beaches. It is against the law to walk on the sand dunes and to damage any beach grass, this comes to a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail. Metal detecting is not allowed in city parks or on any other city property. Now as far as being outside the city limits, I have neither found anything saying you cant metal detect in public areas nor have I been asked to stop or told I cant.
