    Found after hurricane Ike

I was visiting my sister on Sanibel Island the weekend after hurricane Ike. Bowman's Beach was covered with about 3 feet of newly deposited sand and tons of sea shells. There were several other metal detectors hitting all the beaches and keeping the beach very clean I must say. I found this target more towards the dune line than lower to the breaking waves. I was using the 12 inch super coil and was going much deeper than I really wanted to be digging as it was very hot. I'm not sure if the coin is real or fake but it does have quite a bit of calcification on the piece. The photos aren't very good the coin side with the cross shows very nice silver coloring. Besides a few pieces of junk and some newer coins it was all I found that weekend. The other metal detector folks seemed to have cleaned up all the beaches very well. This piece was found at the Lighthouse Beach area. Thanks for looking.

    JR:
I look forward to seeing that coin cleaned up.
Could you also put a US coin in the pic for size comparision?
    The coin is not Mexican.

Soaking it in some Lime-Away (or similar) should remove the calcified stuff without hurting the metal. (But be sure to read the instructions on the bottle to make sure.)

Wow, that's a great find! I just put up a post about this, if anyone finds coins like that on the West coast of Florida? Apparently they do.... Plus I live only about an hour away from the Sanibel area. You know I will be hitting the beaches after the next storm shoves through.

This is an old post but my feeling is pot metal souvenir. I would still rather find one of these than a clad coin anyday.
I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines.  I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.
