    Is This A Cob?

Bought a small lot of uncleaned Spanish copper cops. I enjoy cleaning old coins even if most of them are just slugs. Many of the cobs turned out to be fairly interesting, but I found this. Rampant lion? Is this English?

Felipe III (1598-1621). Take a look at the second coin down on this page (http://www.maravedis.org/felipe3.html) then rotate your coin ('castle' side) to get similar alignment. It's denomination is 4 maravedis--the four hash marks to the right of the castle. Here's two more pics: http://www.arminius-numismatics.com/...lbum=70&pos=15

    I'd say Felipe III :

Edit: (If the above link shows a "page not found" error after clicking it, then it needs to be copied into your search engine, where it should come up. The site seems to be very touchy about being hotlinked to.)

    Thank You!

I couldn't find any pictures with rampant lions alone. On quartered shields, but not singular. I wonder if it's counterfit? I didn't recognise the castles as such. Debased copper instead of silver I've read about, but the impression on the coin does seem to be a little inept when I compare it to the pictures you supplied.

if its a counterfeit its a good one! a lot of times the fake cobs have very sharp lines. this one looks worn.

Not to worry; your coin looks fine--from this novice's viewpoint.

Actually I ment a period counterfit. One would think though that counterfiters wouldn't bother with pennies. But then again, maybe they had a surplus of copper.
