    UPDATE on strange unknown

I got the coin yesterday. I still can not make heads or tails of it. Perhaps it is some kind of fake. Then again, maybe it is the way they minted coins for the crusade. It seems to be a cast coin of one type, possable Brazil. That was then stamped over with a crusader cross. In some of the inside flat parts you can see writing that was part of the first casting. I can make out letters VINCES (or close) and ICANNUS and W or U PGRIE. Ever come across that writing? I still lean towards a fake or copy. The coin rings but might be made of two different metals like tin and silver since it is shy in weight. Your opinions are most welcome!

    Re: UPDATE on strange unknown

Sorry but I am no good at identifying these type of coins but it is very interesting so I am posting to follow the thread. Did you buy it or find it? It is a very nice coin, congrats. Even if it turns out to be a copy it looks very authentic. Good luck, HH Charlie

We've seen that same reverse crest here on TNet within the last week; perhaps even the same coin!

    Post in What Is It.

I dont know what it is but it appears very shiny with absolutely no wear or patina. Maybe someone was experimenting, trying to change the markings on an old coin by hammering with different punches and dies.

Like you said in the other post, it looks like an old Portuguese coin underneath.
