    1550 Gold Esqudo?

I posted a message about a 2 esqudo in the general discussion site. They recommended to post here. Would like anyone to tell me if its real or not. I had it tested for gold content. It tested for at least 18 kt. The jeweler could only test for up to 18 kt. but believes it to be better. Would appreciate any info.

A high res pic of obverse and reverse along with its weight in grams and average diameter in mm would be most helpful in assisting you.

IMO, I don't believe 2 escudos were minted in Mexico in 1550, so I'd personally rule out that country.

    Re: 1550 Gold Esqudo?

A 2 escudo should weigh about 6.7 or 6.8 grams (plus or minus) and measure about 0.8 inches in diameter.
    The "S" may signify Seville.

    Re: 1550 Gold Esqudo?

A 'full weight' 8 escudos in gold weighed 27.468 grams during this period; a one escudo: 3.43 gms.
At 2.2 gms, it's too heavy for a 1/2 escudo (if one were minted) and very underweight for a one excudo though it does not appear to have been 'clipped' to the extent required to get it down to 2.2 gms.

The copper ones do, but since 1982 they have been plated zinc and weigh 2.5 grams. The steel war pennies of 1943 weigh 2.7 grams.

As another reference point, an average dollar bill weighs almost exactly 1 gram.

If you don't mind the Qs: Where did you get the coin and what price did you pay?

I dont have any gold escudos to compare with, but this caught my eye. I didnt expect them to be thin. What is the diameter?
A pic of the edge may help.
