    2 Escudo 1596

    Hello,
I would like to share the great find I did a couple of years ago in the Netherlands.
My first goldcoin(2 Escudo 1596B,Philip II, minted Sevilla) was staring at me and so I took the coin with me after laying in the sand for a couple of hundred years just waiting for me :-)
The weight is 6,77 and exactly the weight in which the coin was minted.I ám thinking to sell the coin, but what could be the worth of it? Anyone an idea?
    Thanks a lot,
    kind regards,
    Henk

    Hello Tom,
I've contacted some people in the USA and also Dan.
The problem is that they want to see the coin in real.I can understand that but the risc is to big for me.
What if they return a fakecoin? I don't think they will, but I also know that I'm not happy when the coin must travel for so many miles. So I'm looking for a good coinexpert here in Holland I think.
    Regards,
    Henk

    Henk:
Sedwick will not return a fake coin (unless he receives a fake coin); he's a reputable dealer and an expert in cobs.

BTW, that "B" shows up well on your coin, the initial of the assayer, Juan Vicente Bravo.

Henk, I would be worried about sending my coin overseas too. With my luck it would just get lost, and I wouldn't even get a fake back.

As others have said, Dan is a a reputable dealer and a foremost authority, so his opinion (if good) can add a lot to value. To do a little self apraisal I offer the following info...

2005 Spinks Coinex Auction Estimates (look at pages 130-132):

    http://www.spink.com/auctions/pdf/5014.pdf

Prices realized from a 2004 Heritage Auction Sale:

13808 Felipe II gold Escudo, 1556-98, Friedberg 178 (ex-56), Cayon 3854, Seville Mint, S and P horizontal to the right. Very Fine. From the Morris Geiger Collection.Sold for: $690.00.

13809 Felipe II gold Escudo, 1556-98, Friedberg 178 (ex-56), Cayon 3854, Seville Mint, S with horizontal P to the right. VF-XF, long scratch on the reverse. From the Morris Geiger Collection.Sold for: $747.50.

13810 Felipe II gold 2 Escudos, 1556-98, Friedberg 169 (ex-53), Cayon 3872, Seville Mint, S with horizontal P below. Crude planchet shape, but full weight at 6.77 grams. Nearly XF, boldly struck on the obverse, but the reverse is somewhat double-struck. From the Morris Geiger Collection.Sold for: $977.50.

These prices realized are a good bit higher than the Spinks estimates in the catalog link. Based on the condition of your coin and the fact that you can see a full date I would estimate the value at $900 - $1200 if offered in a similar auction. I don't claim to have any expertise though, this is just a guess on my part...
