Nice Cuzco 2...wow, that will bring a fine price.
The 3rd escudo bottom row 2 down from the cuzco...are there balls on the end of the cross bars?

Yeah, bottom row 1st from left is a 1698 Cuzco 2E, and one of the nicer ones I have ever seen.


The bottom row, 3rd from left is some type of older SFDB 2E, identifiable by the Mexico mint type cross ends. It is probably very rare, and from the 1650's to 1680's time period. I have a picture of a 1640's one that has real small bumps on the ends of the cross, but the one you found seems different.

3rd row down, 5th from the left. This one has transposed fields in the shield, which is a rarer error variety. 2nd row, 4th from left also. Looks like same obverse die.

Interesting you bring that up about the Lima....I found Lima 1 R cob near survivor camp - 1693.... quite likely from a survivor's pocket, according to the opinions at Fisher's Sebastian Museum. They said it is quite rare to find a Lima coin at a 1715 site.

Wayne, you need to buy Craig's two books on the Florida Collection, one on gold and one on silver. The state's collection provides the largest "study population" of coins available to better estimate the overall variety of the coinage recovered through the years and the scarceness of individual date/mint/assayer issues...

As of the date of Craig's book there were 304 identifiable Lima silver coins in the state's collection. Of these 304 there were 13 identifiable 1693 dated Lima mint marked coins. 10 of these had visible assayer initial (V) and 2 were 1 reale denomination.

Craig's book is exhaustive in its breakdown, a true scholarly work. That is why I like it.

I'll see if I can get a Lima number from Craigs Floprida gold book when I unearth it from my library.

Stan...that is some awesome information...any idea how to report non-recorded finds to the State of Florida to add to the population or is that limited to just State collection coins? I will definitely invest in his books...that is some amazing data!

The Florida collection is a just a very small fraction of recoveries and because of the way it was accumulated (randomly) it is by no means a an accurate cross section of specific denominations, dates, mints, or assayers. It is, however, the only information available on a large study population. Craig presents a thorough description on what his work is and what it is not. The books are fairly pricey, but are mandatory for any 1715 fleet coin collector. Get em!

The state does not record non-salvage coin finds and would have no interest unless there was great historical significance tied to a particular find.

Shared knowledge can only benefit this section on cobs and anything to do with 1715 fleet information on this thread and the treasure hunting community at large...it amazes me that you haven't recieved a banner for the intangible information that you regularly provide..I quess TNet is geared more toward the tangible stuff and doesn't understand the countless hours of research that members like you provide...without knowledge, this stuff means very little.

I would like to suggest that TNET modify things and give out a scholar banner. I am nominating Stan.
