So i've had this collection of coins and bills for a while, and noticed this one today in a coin holder. The holder was labeled "mexico 1 escudo"

I'm not exactly sure what it is or how old it might be. it is about the size of a dime, and feels heavy. looks real to me.

sorry for the bad pics, i don't have a camera so I used my phone...

the letters on the cross side, clockwise from bottom: MEX HISPAN

and on the shield side: S V D G ?? , then a JM (directly to left of shield)

thanks.

'SVDG' did appear on Mexican (Mexico City mint mark 'Mo') one escudo gold coins weighing about 3.3 grams. The full inscription was: PHILIPPVS V. D. G--then the date. The 'bar tippped' cross was used on this coin. The letter "J" is the initial of the assayer's last name. These escudos were issued in 1712-15 and 1727; and were composed of .917 fine gold.

IMO, the other side looks 'suspect'. It should read +HISP.ET INDIARVM and the four spaces in the cross should be filled with fleurs-de-lis images, not "X"s as shown. Also, I don't believe escudos were ever marked MEX; more likely, those letters would read REX (king), but REX does not appear on the 'SVDG' coin.
Don.......

thanks for the help. I looked at it under some higher magnification...the x's are definitely fleur de lis's...the pic makes them look like an x.

the M in what I thought was MEX might be an R. it is a little worn in that spot, and hard to tell.

edit: it might not even be an R. i really can't tell...and the E might not be an E. It looks to be a B or 8 something. Could it read ?BX??
