Is this real?
This is my contribution to the new cob forum, moved from "What is it?", found many years ago. I am trying to find out if this is counterfit, copy, or reale. I was advised to weigh it. I have yet to find anyone with a gram scale. It weighs .90 oz. on the Post Office scale.
I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines. I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.

Re: Is this real?
At first glance I thought real - for sure...
But the more I look at it, the edges look funky, more like it was cast than struck/hammered.
I would still think real or reale) ;-). But still a little funky.
How/where'd you find it?

Re: Is this real?
I agree with Marc; too many sharp edges for such a worn coin. But then, I'm no expert.

Re: Is this real?
It sure looks real. A lot of them had been what is known as "clipped". That is were they chopped off a piece for themselves for change, or just to cheat someone, or it was made too heavy and some was chopped off to make it just right. I have seen many right off the bottom look like that after cleaning. Weigh it to see. But it surely looks reale-pun intended.

Re: Is this real?
I dont want to say exactly where it came from to sway the decision. Trez said he thought it was real, or a very good counterfeit. I am looking for someone with a gram scale. If it is a cast fake, then there should be others identical.

Biggy,
Either way...it looks a whole lot better than some of the "cobs" that I have seen posted (some even this past month, LOL) claiming to be real.
Your coin...looks like a typical "beach find" reales that was heavily shaved, that has wear and some weaknesses.
The edges which we can't see, do they looked filed or anything that resembles a seam...(new photos show edges, they look perfectly normal to me for a coin such as yours)
Like many have said, photos can't tell you the whole story, very true.
But, on some posted coins...they sure can.
Did you actually find it? adjacent to one of the 1715 wreck-sites. Hope it's real and you find many more of them.
Something to think about...
It's funny how one would make cast or copy of a coin in that condition? what's da point ! (funny.)
Let me know next time your up this way...I'll bring my scale and micro and we'll take a look closer at it, FREE.
Trez

 Pirate of the Ays
Re: Is this real?
Looks real to me, and from the size I would guess about an eight reale. Most likely worth about $260 - $300 US.
Beach find! mine too... LOL

Big C
Put that beautiful coin in the best finds section with your story on how you found it. Detector used? how deep?. Make a story out of it- TN readers will just eat it up- FINDING SPANISH TREASURE. Don't need to discuss where.
In my book certainly in the top 10 of TN best finds.

That is my thumb.
I was told by a coin dealer that it was a cast fake about 25 years ago. They werent worth much at the time. I put it away in a box with my other finds and forgot about it until I got back into MDing. I think the dealer may have been mistaken.

Re: Is this real?
Someone suggested that I weigh it on a gram scale. I finally got around to finding one and it says 26 grams.

Re: Is this real?
Thank you for your observations. I will take a closer look at it and provide more pictures if needed.
I have a question. Originally, before the silver sheets are cut, is the thickness of the sheet perfectly even throughout?
I am looking closer at this cob and it is definetely thicker in the center. This coin is very thick. The pics seem to show an optical illusion. I will look for my micrometer and measure it just for fun. Thanks again for your observations.
