Found my 1st COB today
Im so happy to have found one of these coins! I never thought it would happen! I found this in Ma. on a trail in the woods a foot deep. I dont know how to ID this coin. I see a 56 , and found out so far that it is either 1556, or 1656 were the yrs they only used the last two digets of the yr 1500's 1600's. I would like to know anything about this coin. Thank you and thanks for looking.

Did you post a pic of the coin? I'm pretty sure cobs of your earliest guess (1556) were undated, so that can be ruled out.

We need pics. It could be 1656 or 1756 (if minted in Potosi). Either way, it isn't 1556 as they were undated.

Its a one real (1R) from Potosi ('P') and the date is 1695 (upside down the way you may have been looking at it; '95' in pic). It's called a 'pillars and wave' type and the assayer is Pedro de Villar (the initials VR)

Don and Vor nailed it. By the way, nice cob. Although not a true "heart", it is heart-shaped with a strong strike on both sides which would add a premium if you decide to sell it (I wouldn't). Don't clean it any further. It is beautiful the way it is. Congrats on finding your first cob.

What a beaut! Congrats! How far from the beach was this found? Close to known Spanish galleon wrecks? Fascinating. I suppose someone could have dropped this? I would like to learn more about the site you were on. I am in Florida and have only educated myself on local sites.
