some dredging was being done in the harbor, and tons of these coins were laying on the sand.the locals were grabbing by the hand full.my father in law still has a good bit of them,St thomas was once owned by the Danes, these coins were sent to the island to be used, well the ship sank in the harbor.the date looks like 1730-50 copper. don't know if they are worth anything ???

Hi Karib ! :)

That´s a very interesting find and story too, I´ve never heard of that !!

The coin should be situated like this:

2qls501.jpg

I´ve given it negative colors to see the inscription more clarly.

It seems to be a quite special coin from the danish posession in todays Germany, at that time it was danish and the town / area was called GLÜCKSTADT.

The coin is minted under the danish king Frederik the 4th, who was king from 1699-1730

The coin is a 2 Skilling danske (danish) Glückstadt. I´m quite sure the date is 1715.

The material actually is SILVER, but of low value.

The C W are the initials of the Mint Master Christopher Woltereck

The other side would show the Monogram of Frederik the 4th and the text would say: D. G. REX. DAN & NOR

Please do show us the other side to be absolutely sure.

Thanks for showing us a VERY interesting find with an interesting story to it !! ;D

Friendly regards
agersea from Denmark

Next time I wont spend so much time finding the coin and the story behind it, sorry !!!

Didn´t understand from your posting that you were only interested in the value.

Between $5 - 20, if very, very fine maybe a bit more !!
