Greetings to all you knowledgeable persons!

This silver cob was found with a metal detector this past summer. It was dug at a site in southern California that has for years produced Spanish coins and relics.

    Questions:

    1) In your opinion, is it a genuine old Spanish cob?

    2) If so, what is it?

    3) What would be it's approximate value?

    Size: 1/2 reale

Looks like a Charles II 1/2 real.
    Mexico Mint...$40.00
Please don't ask if it's a real real.
Just my first impression.......ask others but it looks real to me.
Here is a link, look at (Figure 1) it will be the monogram of Charles II, compare to yours and you will see the simularities.

    WOW! Thanks Trez!

You do have a sharp eye!

    Charles II Reign September 17, 1665–November 1, 1700

So this cob most likely dates somewhere between 1665 and 1700?

I tried to find out Mike but they don't want to name the city.

I was told it was in the area of "The Old Spanish Trail." Maybe you'd know what that means because I don't.

It's remote farmland and requires a 4-wheel drive to get to it. The tuff thing is getting permission to hunt.

But I do know the guy well I buy from and if he says it was dug in California it was.

I plan to have a goldsmith make a ring for it.

    Well,

The Old Spanish Trail's Southernmost leg went along about the route of I40.

There was the Anza Trail that went from Tubac, Az. up to Monterrey, Ca.

There was also another trail that went from Tubac to San Diego along about the same route as I8.

The main relic they find are the maravedis cobs. Next would be copper religious medals.

They did find a few gold cobs and extra nice silvers too. But over the years they've taken thousands of maravedi from that site.

One thing I've always wondered about is why the Spanish brought and buried the maravedis cobs here in the first place? Any ideas?

Without knowing around which area the cobs and relics were found (i.e. how close to the ocean, near which mountain pass, etc.), it's very hard to say.

Could be a military payroll shipment, shipwreck loot that was salvaged, operating funds for a local government, tax tribute, or any one of a hundred other reasons.

    Good stuff Mike, thanks!

I'm going to try and get more specific info from them. Not to learn of their hunting location but for historical reasons.

I do know they hunt just after the fields are plowed and most of their finds have been within an area the size of a football field. The plowing probably spread the loot over the area.

I guessing finding such a spot would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Too bad they don't have closeup realtime satellite service for the public like they have for the CIA

Thanks for this information. While this is the only reale cob to come from that site, I also have several Vellon (copper/silver) cobs from there.

The person finding these has taken thousands from that location which is now a farmer's field. Many religious metals and Catholic buttons were also recovered.

Re: Southern Cal Cob - Dug This Summer - Questions

What is now Southern California was at one time a part of Old Mexico and was colonized by the Spaniards so its not unusual to find historical evidence.

In addition, there are a number of spanish ship wrecks along the entire length of the California coast. A few are located in the Channel Islands that extend along the southern coast upwards to Santa Barbara.
