    1/2 real or maravedi

Found this piece at the beach last week after storms. It weighs 2g and may be copper/brass. It has an 'R' on the corner.

    Any clues?
    Thanks.

    Re: 1/2 real or maravedi

Just a guess but that green sure looks like it came from copper.

But there are silver maravedis (not true maravedis as such) called Vellons. Vellons of this shape are rare and often show copper due to their high copper content. I own some perfect examples but none have R's.

Who knows? Maybe it's not even a cob? Maybe it's a reale or maravedis stamped by some owner?

    Thanks Badger.

I cleaned this piece a bit today with washing soda, aluminum foil, boiling water method and it removed all the green patina. The piece now looks dark brown and you can see some copper spots. The most interesting find is that I can see a date now of 1715 or 1719 or 1745. I am not sure about the third number but the others are pretty clear. Also the 'R' could be a 'B'. The piece was found in Florida.

Very nice indeed Moe! All the copper cobs I've seen that shape were 1600's.

That's a very interesting piece you have there. I'd really focus my attention to that location.

You have been finding some unusual unidentified pieces. What beach are you searching? (approximate) Can you show a picture of the date? Were the other pieces silver?
I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines.  I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.
