PS: Added History: Germany commemorated the 9th "Blue Ribbon" race (Munich, 1942) with the issuance of this stamp on July 14, 1942.
During the years of the Third Reich, horse racing was a very popular spectator sport in Germany. People flocked to the annual national races in great numbers, even in the waning days of World War II, when going to large public events meant taking the chance of getting caught in an Allied bombing raid, but that didn't stop them at all. Aside from the wagering aspects of the races, they were also major social events, as is the Kentucky Derby, in the United States, today. During the period from 1936-1944, the government of the Third Reich sponsored a number of national horse races.
The "Brown Ribbon" was an annual July horse race run in Munich (Riem), from 1934-1944. It was the home of International Racing Week. and as part of the Brown Ribbon of Germany.
