Storage locker find

Brother in law got a storage locker over 20 years ago. Nothing much in it except old clothes from the 1920's and 1930's. He checked the pockets of everything and found a ring. Sold the clothes to a consignment shop that sells them to people that need them for plays and TV, etc. Anyhow, the ring is fairly worn. Says "STERLING" inside. Appears to be an onyx stone with a family crest. These are the pics of the crest. Any ideas? I'll apologize beforehand if the pics are too large or if I've posted in the wrong forum.

Thank you. Just trying to figure out how to identify. Had not thought about fraternity ring. That makes a lot of sense. Going to try to keep working on it. He bought the storage unit in California, so maybe that will narrow down my search a little..Not likely.
