What was the most significant event of WWII in the Pacific?
Rick Clark
Rick Clark, Bachelor Military History and Wars , M:idea, School of Film & Media Studies, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (1968)
Answered May 19
The Battle for Guadalcanal is the most significant. According to the Japanese they knew the war was lost after they lost the island. After that battle is was just a matter of “island hopping.” The Japanese, after inflicting the worst loss the U.S. Navy has ever suffered in a battle, were defeated. and lost the naval battle. The battle for the island was over by February 1, 1943, just 14 months after the war started. Yamamoto said that Japan must achieve their aims within one year or they would loose the war.
The Battle at Midway was a major Japanese defeat, just too bad that the Japanese did not acknowledge it as such, maybe some casualties could have been prevented, they were just stupidly stubborn.

Regarding Midway (and other locations): Even more casualties could have been prevented if we had available in 1942 the technology we used in 1945.

We dropped them because of Russia, Japan was holding out for better surrender terms and Russia was offering them a “conditional surrender”,
if Japan had surrendered to Russia, the door to the Asian triangle would have been closed.

The ex personal parliamentary secretary to the PM of Newfoundland before it merged with Canada in 1949. Told me an amazing story about a Newfoundland serviceman that had been captured. Transported to Japan as a Pow to work on projects in Japan. Jack Ford is one of the few allies to actually experienced an A bomb attack on the ground at Nagasaki.

I believe there was book or an article written about him some years ago. The Jack Ford story.

But for the most lucky and unlucky is this following person Tsutomu Yamaguchi

His story below he survived 2 A bomb attacks his story below.

I’m sure that I have said it a few dozen times over the years, but this is proof that “This is the place to come to, if you want to learn true history!”

Public schools teach such watered down versions of history. It is troubling to my spirit, what the future will learn of our generation.

I have a book on the civil war that has a number of photos, but a greater number of watercolor images with vague information and only two flags painted in.

Thank you folks, for the education, painful as it was to learn at my age.

Not to mention embarrassing...

E.B., you’ve called global climate change a “hoax” before in your Strategic Investor newsletter. That’s a bold claim. After all, most people think that, one, climate change is happening, and two, that humans are causing it.

Why do you think it’s a hoax?

E.B. Tucker, editor, Strategic Investor: Let me start by saying that I’m skeptical of anything about matters where everyone is in agreement. I’ve been this way my whole life. This goes for things like, “You’ve got to go to college. You’ve got to have medical insurance. You’ve got to vote. You’ve got to buy a house.” Everyone says you should do these things, but those things don’t always work out so well for people.

And climate change has reached the point where there’s universal agreement. On a hot day, the average person will tell you it’s because of climate change. Then, he might say that it’ll be 175 degrees here in 75 years if we don’t do something about the climate.

Earlier this year, I was having lunch in Delray Beach and I overheard the guy behind me telling the people at his table how there’s not going to be any snow in Aspen 50 years from now because of climate change. And everyone agreed saying, “I know. I heard the same thing. It’s just awful.”

I just started cracking up. I mean why would there be no snow in Aspen 50 years from now? What would cause that?

The average person has no clue. And yet, there’s now this hysteria around climate change. People are completely sure that humans are causing the planet to warm. The lady at the checkout counter will tell you that climate change is going to be the end of us.

“The 5G fleet.”

Fox News reports before long there will be 35,000 of these “5G freight trucks” on the road. They’re plugged into the nationwide 5G switchover.

Along with that, they’re also bringing a radical new technology worth a mind-blowing $23 trillion that will reshape virtually every American industry...

Big Market Research suggests this industry could grow 156 times over between now and 2025.

That’s enough to make a fortune — potentially millions if you’re in before Wall Street’s “buy-in signal” on December 10th, 2019.

Question: A statistic that gets passed around is that 97% of climate scientists think global warming is real and largely caused by humans. Do you think they’re all wrong?

Doug Casey, founder, Casey Research: Yeah, this 97% figure keeps popping up. Regrettably, it’s impossible to properly debunk the number in a brief discussion such as we’re now having. I suggest readers simply google “97% of scientists climate claim debunked” and see what they get.

That 97% number was promulgated by an Australian blogger named John Cook in 2013. It’s as ridiculous, but has as much popularity, as Al Gore’s “hockey stick.” Out of hundreds of thousands of papers that have been done on climate, he chose 12,000 and manipulated and subjectively interpreted parts of their abstracts to support his a priori beliefs. Many scientists whose names were used subsequently protested. A subsequent recalculation showed that less than 2% of the papers cited actually believe mankind is mainly responsible for any global warming.

But the usual suspects in politics, the media, and the entertainment business picked up on the terms “97%” and “scientists.” They repeated them as a mantra, and now the public assumes – based on almost nothing but repetition – that anthropogenic global warming [AGW] is a critical danger to life on Earth.

Truth in science isn’t determined by consensus. But, for what it’s worth, another survey was taken in 2009 among 31,000 hard scientists – physicists and chemists, not sociologists and psychologists – including 9,000 with Ph.Ds, who explicitly stated they believed there was no evidence of significant AGW.

Question: But data from NASA shows the last five years have been the hottest years on record. What do you make of this, E.B.?

E.B.: Look, what if today is warmer than yesterday. Does that necessarily justify a trend? I wouldn’t say so. I need to see a lot more than that to be convinced.

The problem is that a lot of times you look at this stuff and they’ll say, “It’s the warmest weather on record back to 1910.” Wait a minute. What was happening then?

I believe that the planet goes through weather cycles. And these cycles have much more impact on the climate than humans. But people are uncomfortable with that because they like to think that humans are the most powerful organism in the universe. I’m not sure that that’s the case.

I think that the patterns of weather are much bigger than human influence.

Of course, the average person doesn’t think this way. That’s because they only hear from scientists what they want to hear. But as Doug mentioned a minute ago, there are a lot of scientists that disagree with the “consensus” view on climate change.

And all these strange things happened to them. They lose grants. Their research doesn’t get published. So you don’t see them in Time magazine, USA Today, National Geographic, or on 20/20 or 60 Minutes, which is where most people get their news.

There are a lot of scientists who don’t buy the man-made climate change theory. But they’re branded as rogue. And you’ve got the whole thing with John Coleman who co-founded the Weather Channel. He was an outspoken critic of climate change hysteria. He said there was no significant man-made global warming and no reason to fear it in the future. The Weather Channel, the company he co-founded, sent its chief executive on CNN to distance the company from Coleman.

The point is, people who come out and say, “Look, I don’t think this is the case,” are not well thought of.

Doug: E.B. is correct. The climate is changing, of course – it’s been changing for the entire 4.5 billion years of the Earth’s history.

I am, therefore, a believer in climate change. But there are many reasons why it’s changing, and we can get to those in a second. The important ones have nothing to do with mankind.

The warmists say it’s because of carbon dioxide generation. But carbon dioxide is a trace gas in the atmosphere. It only accounts for about .04% of the atmosphere. Nitrogen, on the other hand, makes up 80% of the atmosphere. Oxygen accounts for the other 20%. Water vapor, or H2O, has a far, far greater influence on the atmosphere than CO2.

I’ve been a science buff my whole life, and I’ve read many papers on both sides of this issue. In the ’70s, I remember seeing magazine covers showing glaciers toppling the skyscrapers of New York. The hysterics were worried about a new ice age back then.

Since the ’80s though, they’ve been beating a drum for AGW. They completely omit the fact that the Earth went through a period when it was a giant snowball.

We’ve had at least four major ice ages just during the Pleistocene, the last couple of million years. Glaciers several miles thick covered most of the United States. The last ice age ended about 11,000 years ago. Since then, the planet has been cyclically warming. But you have to keep this in context. Those were glacial periods that lasted 100,000 years or so. There have been times in the Earth’s history, like the Cryogenian period about 700 million years ago, that lasted 100 million years, when the entire planet might have been a snowball.

Put it this way. If we had a choice – and we don’t – we’d be much better off if the planet warmed a couple of degrees than cooled a couple of degrees.

E.B.: Right. This climate change stuff didn’t come out of nowhere. The propaganda is about 40 or 50 years in the making. But back in the ’50s and ’60s, people thought the opposite. People were worried about global cooling. They thought the world was going to turn into a giant frozen tundra like Siberia. That was the fear.

Then, on the first Earth Day in 1970, Paul Ehrlich said that all the fish in the oceans would die and wash up on shore.

Then, the fear was acid rain. And then everyone was worried that a hole was going to appear in the ozone layer.

Now, people don’t even use the phrase global warming anymore. They dropped that. Now, they say climate change. It’s an ongoing public relations machine. So, this thing keeps evolving.

I just wonder what the next chapter in the climate saga is going to be because they’ll come up with something new, like a marketing slogan. They’ll put it out there and then everybody will eat it up.

It’ll be fun to watch people buy into it. Somebody will go on 60 Minutes and say, “I’m here looking at this new thing and it’s really frightening for all of us.” Then, they’ll bring a 6-year-old to the White House as they always do and say, “Mr. President, please save the planet for my future.”

Question: If humans aren’t behind climate change, what’s causing temperatures to rise?

Doug: The sun, primarily. The sun is the only thing that stands between us and the Earth turning into a dead snowball about two degrees above absolute zero. Climate fluctuations are mainly caused by fluctuations in the sun’s intensity. But they’re also caused by the gradually changing tilt of the Earth’s axis. And Milankovitch cycles, dealing with changes in the Earth’s orbit around the sun. The solar system’s movement around the galaxy may have major, but as yet unpredictable effects on the climate. But there are other important factors.

Volcanism is one. There are always 40 or 50 spewing gigantic amounts of gas into the atmosphere at any one time – and many more under the oceans. The ocean is a vastly more important heat sink than the atmosphere, and the circulation of ocean currents is critical to climate. The atmosphere is thin and lightweight by comparison to the ocean.

The thing that most concerns me about global warming hysteria is that it might discredit the very idea of science for the average man. They vote on concepts they have almost no understanding of. The average voter has a far better understanding of the Kardashians than science. There have been a lot of spoofs where the masses have signed petitions to ban sodium chloride – table salt – and dihydrogen oxide – water – as dangerous poisons. The AGW hysteria is similar.

Question: Do you think the planet could actually start cooling soon? If so, how soon could that happen?

Doug: It’s hard to say. But any geologist will tell you that we’re in an interglacial period, and it’s highly likely there is going to be another genuine ice age when this interglacial period ends, just as they were predicting back in the ’70s. It’s just that the timing is up in the air.

The warmists never, ever, mention the Earth’s geological history. Not even its very recent history, just since the invention of writing. There have been large fluctuations in climate, confirmed with ice core drilling in glaciers, sediments on the ocean floor, and tree rings.

For instance, we know about the Roman Warm Period between roughly 250 BC and 400 AD which coincided with the rise and peak of the Roman Empire. That was followed by a serious cold snap that may have been instrumental in causing the barbarian invasions from the north, followed by the Dark Ages. Then came the Medieval Warm Period from about 950-1250. Then the Little Ice Age followed, which took place between roughly 1300 and 1850.

Since then, the planet has been gradually warming again. Of course on a larger scale it’s been warming since the last major ice age ended 11,000 years ago. Meanwhile, in the midst of all the propaganda and hysteria, the Earth’s climate has been stable to cooler for the last 15 years.

Question: Why peddle this idea that the Earth is warming rapidly? What’s the motive?

E.B.: Bigger government.

I mean, climate change has become a pop culture drumbeat. If you watch the Oscars, somebody is going to say, “We’ve got to do something about the climate.”

But no one, of course, knows what to do. All they know is that we should give the government more money to do something about this. And that money is obviously going to come from the developed world. I mean you’re not going to get any money if you implement a carbon tax in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

So it’s basically just a giant tax scheme. I mean carbon taxes brought in $82 billion last year. That’s a big number. And no one even knows where this money goes. You can’t question it because everybody has the best of intentions.

Question: It’s just one big money grab?

E.B.: It’s about more than just money. Carbon taxes give government much more control over commerce. When you buy an airline ticket to fly over Kansas, you’ve got to pay a bunch of money to a U.N. organization to mitigate the effect you have on the lower atmosphere or whatever as you fly through it in an airplane.

It’s stupid, but people go for it. I was in Mexico two weeks ago and took a domestic Aeroméxico flight. When I bought the ticket there was an option to “fly green” for an extra fee. The airline takes the money and buys carbon offset credits. It’s very popular actually. But no one really knows where that money goes.

And it’s only just the beginning. Now, you have Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez saying the world will end in 12 years if we don’t do something about climate change. She’s proposing that we build trains across the ocean and rebuild every building in America to prevent this from happening. Somebody clearly benefits from all of this.

And it’s only going to get worse. You’ve got to put yourself in the mind of government bureaucrats, who are just businesspeople in government. Think of them as a government version of businesspeople.

They want their business to get as big as possible. And the U.S. government has never really collected more than roughly 18% to 20% of gross domestic product in taxes. But that’s not enough.

Let’s say that carbon taxes reach just 2% of economic output. For the developed world alone, that would mean around $1 trillion. It’s a serious amount of money.

So I think that climate change is a cover for big government. And it’s a great one. People will go for it. That’s why they’re pushing it so hard.

Question: So what should be done about climate change? Anything?

Doug: Absolutely nothing should be done about it. As I’ve tried to indicate, the climate has a life of its own. If it’s affected at all by humans, our effect may be dwarfed by that of ants and termites – but that’s a whole other can of worms, as it were.

That’s not to say man can’t have a major effect on the Earth. Humans have wiped out a number of major species, from passenger pigeons to the buffalo. Both of those species once practically covered North America. And yes, we could probably pave the planet, and wipe out most life. But the exact opposite of that is more likely to happen.

The fact is that as technology improves – which is happening at the rate of Moore’s Law practically across the board – things become vastly more efficient, with much less waste. Not to mention the human population of the developed world is in an accelerating downtrend. CO2, which should be viewed as no more than necessary plant food, is a complete non-problem.

So, sure. Humans can have an effect on the planet, but not even remotely as major as the sun, volcanism, and other natural processes. The big danger isn’t climate change, it’s hysteria. And government, and the types who manipulate it, destroying the economy. I’m afraid that many scientists on the global warming bandwagon are there for purely selfish economic reasons. Unfortunately most science funding today is done directly and indirectly through the government. It’s a political process.

And if you’re a scientist who’s considered politically unreliable, who believes politically incorrect things, you’re not going to get the funding. You’re not going to get journals to publish your articles. You’re not going to get positions in universities, which are universally controlled by leftists. It’s interesting that the people who believe in AGW [anthropogenic global warming] are almost all leftists, and the people who don’t believe in it tend to be non-leftists.

Climate science has been turned from a legitimate branch of knowledge into a new age religion, where heretics are persecuted. It’s become a means to centralize even more power in the State. After all, the fate of the Earth is at stake!

So, it’s very advantageous to join the crowd if you’re a scientist, or at least not fight against it. It’s evidence of the corruption of science itself, which is really serious.

That’s another argument for getting the U.S. government 100% out of science of all types. The will, and the capital, to fund scientific projects will still exist. It just shouldn’t be allocated by the political process of government.

Question: What threat does climate change pose to capitalism?

Doug: Climate change itself poses zero threat to capitalism. But the hysteria about it is a big threat. Why? Because the only way to alter something as major as the climate is through the government. You have to force people to do certain things and forbid them from doing other things. Power-hungry statists are using the hysteria as an excuse to do that.

Climate change has got an aura of moral righteousness about it. Marxists, socialists, and leftists are making Greenism into a new religion. Of course, it’s not designated as such; but these things are actually secular religions. They’re sold on the basis of being morally correct. They have dogmas, sins, saints, devils, clergy, heretics, crusades – the whole nine yards.

That’s a major reason why Greenism and global warmism are so popular. People always want to feel morally righteous, and that God is on their side. These things appeal to emotion, not reason. It’s all about psychology, not science.

Some of these people are actually saying it’s going to be the end of life on Earth – so you even have the religious idea of apocalypse. If there’s ever been any excuse for the people that hold these views to take control of everybody else, this is it.

It’s just further proof that there are two kinds of people in the world: people who like to control physical reality, and people who like to control other people.

It’s very clever on the part of these people to have harnessed pseudoscience and herded many scientists – although I think it’s only a small, corrupt, but very vocal minority – into the belief we’re all going to die because the oceans are going to drown us as the Earth turns into a giant steam bath.

How much warmer can things get than they’ve been since the last ice age ended 11,000 years ago? I don’t know and neither do they. How much longer is it going to be before we go into another ice age? I don’t know – and neither do they.

The real argument isn’t about earth science. It’s about political science.

And it’s very clever on the part of the people who are pushing it.

Chris’ note: E.B. just released an urgent video that all Dispatch readers should check out right away.

It all centers on the biggest tech opportunity today… one that’s worth a mind-blowing $23 trillion.

It’s something we’ve never seen in the history of America… and may never see in our lifetimes again.

As you’ll see, a fleet of “5G freight trucks” are hitting America’s roads. The technology behind them is tied to 5G, but 5,476 times more lucrative. The arrival of these trucks is the first wave in the nationwide adoption of this technology. And most of the public is in the dark about it. This spells opportunity.

In fact, if you get involved by December 10, you could claim a winter windfall of $125,000. Here’s how…

Reader Mailbag
Do you think climate change is real? Or do you agree with Doug and E.B. that it’s all a hoax? You can share your thoughts with us at [email protected].

Meanwhile, a reader shares his excitement for 5G wireless technology after E.B. told us why it’s going to revolutionize our lives:

I believe we are at the apex of some of the most dynamic investment opportunities in the history of the markets. 5G is one of those! My investment strategy is to buy stocks on the periphery of these explosive-growth opportunities. My portfolio has been structured along these lines. 5G, cannabis, biotech, technology, robotics, etc., are the primary categories.

I am comfortable with my selections. However, I have reached a point where I am no longer investing in new opportunities because of my feelings of an imminent market collapse.

I agree with 97.2% of all that....
I mean, that is what the experts are doing, assuming that there is a possibility that a certain number of people that will buy into their research.

Our government stuck it’s finger into a pot of boiling water and decided that it just started boiling, and never considered the possibility that it was boiling fifty thousand years ago. They couldn’t unring that bell [emoji348]!

So, now there is no amount of money, that they won’t spend to prove that they were right all along.

The water level of the oceans have been rising for eons. It is clear when you look at the Bimini road.
It wasn’t built under water!

The planet has been warming since the last ice age! It is nothing new to the planet...

If you own any beachfront timeshare, get rid of it before they figure it out...

Interesting sales pitch. However anyone that thinks 7.5 billion people are NOT having an impact on the climate are blind to the facts. Just the breathing alone of this many humans adds 600,000 metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere each day, not counting our vehicles, factories etc, not factoring in the loss of millions of acres of forest each year that would otherwise be helping to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Of course there is an impact. But what solutions are there?
And why is it the politicians talk about and debate climate change on tv rather than scientists.
Sixteen year old girls need to live a few years before they start advising the world.
I'm afraid the situation is hopelessly mired in politics now.
Be that as it may, I know of a stone which was presumed to be worked on by the Spanish when they came to Missouri.
Since such signs are going to be similiar whether here or the desert in the Southwest, how can I learn the signs?

Problem is most in the World will probably listen to that 16 year olds nonsense, as if there is any thing short of a radical change in life style which will make a difference, I do not see any of the protesters giving up anything to radically reduce their carbon footprint, as they talk and text on their cell phones about how bad industry is to the climate, must be great to be so damn ignorant and righteous.

The irony is totally lost on them. They support industry and "evil" corporations while they use their products.
I feel for them in a way. They have no idea what they are asking for. Wonder what they will do when they get it.

I had a disturbing image of fish dying in water due to the lack of oxygen in it and I had a vision of mankind suffering a similar fate in the future...How disturbing...It would be something IF we continue on our current path...We would not have to worry about another ice age or a meteor strike ...We have global warming...

it was just twelve thousand years ago that the great lakes were formed from melting glaciers I guess the earth had a round of ...climate change back then and nobody really knows how many humans were on the earth then . the fact is climate change is a common thing for this earth to do.

Maru, or 丸, is a word meaning circle, or perfect among other things. I had a beautiful dog named Maru.
"A Japanese shipping law of 1900 (Meiji 33) said "船舶ノ名称ニハ成ルベク 其ノ末尾ニ丸ノ字ヲ附セシムルベシ" (As far as possible, ships should be given names ending in the character "maru".)"
Which is why so many zJapanese ships have names with the suffix maru.
Hakudo Maru, Is a spirit in Japanese mythology who taught humans how to make ships
The name is of Indic origin...what is the Amru Maru? I'll look, but Stargate???
