I would check the new batteries....I just had a set that caused trouble and they read full voltage but could not take any load and ran flat in a radio in a couple of hours.
Is your pinpoint switch rattling around/loose ? Or locked forward.
Clean the two contact spikes in the case and check that one has not pressed backward from being hit when the battery pack is slipped in. If that has happened you may see a few tiny pinpricks in the metal of the battery holder where arching has occured.
