I have a question about the frequency

Hey all I've been metal detecting for about 7 years now on and off. I never really paid attention to the frequency a detector uses. What would be the difference in frequency? Will one frequency penetrate deeper than another? What would be the best frequency to use? (If there is one) Thanks!

Re: I have a question about the frequency

    Hello GaDigger81!

    Sky Pilot here!

Without getting too technical the frequency (measured in kilohertz) is how many times per second the detector sends out and receives back it's signal. Most detectors use between 5 to 50 KHz

and very generally the lower the frequency the better the response to silver and the higher (to a degree), the better for gold and smaller targets.

In answer to your question, there is no best frequency. There are detectors made for specific purposes of course, but a general purpose detector will work well in an all around detecting situation.

The detector you use will most likely be a general purpose one (made for all around searching) and usually have a mid range frequency of

12-15 KHz, to be useful when hunting both gold and silver for instance. There is a great deal more to it than this, of course (soil compostion, mineralization, matrixing, etc.) but I hope I've helped answer your question.

    Welcome to TreasureNet!

Re: I have a question about the frequency

differant freq are best for certain things low for silver and depth --higher for small items and gold --thats why some machines are dual 3 / 15 freq --and why other new machines are multi freq models

going over ground that was searched in the old days by single freq models with a machine with a differant freq than the first machine -- might yeild some very interesting finds

Most detectors are one or two freqs, Minelab's FBS detectors uses 28 freqs and their BBS detectors uses 17.....

BBS is Minelab’s patented multiple frequency metal detection technology. BBS transmits a broad range of 17 frequencies from 1.5 kHz to 25.5 kHz. This broad range of frequencies gives the detector more information about a target and the surrounding environment. BBS technology can be found in Minelab’s Excalibur II and Sovereign GT metal detectors....

FBS is Minelab’s patented multiple frequency metal detection technology. FBS transmits a broad range of 28 frequencies from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz. The increased frequency range allows FBS technology to offer more accurate target identification, improved depth of detection and improved sensitivity. FBS technology can be found in Minelab’s Explorer, E-TRAC and Safari metal detectors.

Thanks, yeah I heard alot of great things about Minelab's. It sounds like that would be a great detector to have. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a more advanced machine. When the kids get older and out of the house. LOL I have a long way to go their only 2 and 7. Thanks again and luck diggin!!
