    Ground penetrating radar

    Hello to all
Does anyone have intimate knowledge about ground penetrating radar?
I have an old army, vietnam era mine locator which is a rough type of GPR and I am working on modifying it for more general field use,
my question is about the receiver and the display format
I want to be able to understand what the thing is telling me.
Any help and all ideas are appreciated
    Best Regards
    Alan

Good luck. GPR is quite a speciality to understand. The only thing that I can tell you is the horizontal lines represent layers of earth much as tree rings represent seasons. The lines are "stacked up in fairly uniform order" until it has been disturbed or an object has been inserted, then you get "wavy lines". That's as simple an explanation that I can give. No I have not used one but I have observed them being used. Frank

Are you sure it's GPR? Surplus Vietnam mine detectors are typically the AN/PSS-11, which is an ordinary metal detector.

    Hello Carl
Sorry for the delay in responding, I was out of town.
I have the manual for this unit and it explains that it uses a type of pulsed radar for identifiying the non-metalic mines, so I am sort of sure that it is convertable to a more sophisticated type, by the addition of a scanner display and integrator.

I think that machine is just a PI machine. A good GPR machine would have an LCD display and a complex search head that would allow a X and Y axis input, and ideally a Z axis input to get a good 3 dimensional display. Trust me, it an tough row to hoe to get there. We'll get there in small increments at time.
