When you first turn it on, it will perform the battery test. That's the loud continuos beep. If its lasting longer the 5-10 seconds there might be something else to check or call about.

Nokta Impact, Makro Racer, Tesoro Vaquero, Tesoro Sand Shark.
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
If you turned it on inside your house or apartment, it might
be so near metal (or electrical interference) that it is responding
to that. Try it outside, away from any metallic objects (including
whatever is on your own body) and any power lines, etc.

Like tall Tom said, sounds like EMI. Any kind of wifi router, cordless phones, even fluorescent lights can cause EMI. Watch out for over head (underground too) power lines also.

It is very susceptable to EMI. I have several detectors and for the longest time I thought my Compadre was bad. I tweaked the trimpots etc. to see if I could get it working. Nope. I sent it back to Tesoro twice. Same each time back. I must have an underground transformer near my house and it drives the detector nuts. Take it out to a nice park and check it. There it works fine and has nice discrimination. I had always planned to send Tesoro a video of it as they think I'm a nutcase now.
