hey - so I have an issue with the cord that connects my WOT coil (just a real big DD coil)to my detector (and the set up is - its all coiled - like an old school phone cord....and it goes inside the shaft) - Im certain its the cord and not the connections - in fact -by grabbing the cord....while trying to turn on the machine - I know right about where on the cord it is - Id attempt some sort of repair - but it has a 6-pin connector (or maybe 7....something like that) - so Im thinking there are going to be many little wires in there - and - a recipe for disaster - unfortunately unlike an older machine - where a bad/intermittent connection would just cause the coil to cut out - if there is a glich on my machine....it makes it shut off - (and just lately its become hard to turn on) - just looking for suggestions - normally I would just get another coil - but this particular coil is expensive ...and probably worth more than my machine at this point - should I try some run of the mill electronics repair place - or is there a coil specialist that needs to do it (?) - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

oh - the covering/etc on the entire cord is intact and in very good condition (a little wear near the bottom where its exposed -but the problem is definitely near the top - where its protected inside the shaft) - thanks...

Curious what kind of machine your operating and if the coil is removable. Anyrate if you know approximately where the problems is and its near the top end of the cord go talk to a good repair shop and see if they are willing to re-terminate the cord. As long as they don't have to remove to much of it you should be fine after the bad section is removed.

What company and model machine?
Sounds like a Minelab Explorer series, Coiltec coil?

May be able just cut out the bad area and reuse the connector. If not, you can buy them on-line.

Tried contacting the coil maker for a cable repair?

Jeff

it is a Minlelab explorer - so I can take it off easily enough - I just have no idea on how to do the cut-and-splice - seeing that Ive got it narrowed down to about an inch or so - cutting out that part should be easy enough - I just don't know if its as easy to reconnect - (at least as easy as....say...stereo speakers) - maybe I should just go to Radio Shack or something.....or someone who works on computers or something....seems like they will have had experience splicing things....i think if it were on an older model..pretty easy fix....but....the 6-pin connector just makes me think there are going to be a ton of wires crammed in there....and Im not really that much of a fix-it person............thanks....

I would not splice the cable if you only need to remove a couple of inches from the cable to re-terminate the wires to the connector. But the cable used for these is different than a lot of other brands / types, two internal coaxial cables, not four separate wires. A little harder to rewire. Cable looks like this.

If it was mine I would call Kellyco and ask to speak to Barry in their Minelab Repair Center. They do top notch work and they are an authorized Minelab Repair Center.

Have a new cable installed, not a splice....

Just replaced a coil on a Excalibur for a friend with the same type of cable. What a nightmare...cable is 26mm and no color coding other then the pin out on the plug, shielding wire is fragile.... New NEL SS on the Excalibur

Send it to barry or dave...I would recommend cutting out the bad before replace the cable, hopefully the break is closer to the plug.

the issue with the cord is right near the top where it goes into the detector - though not in the connector - I took it to an electronics/stereo place - 55 bucks an hour (yikes) -but - shouldn't take more than an hour - the guy will be just cutting out an inch or two and re-terminating the end for me -
I don't think anything relating to a Minelab dealer will help - its not a Minelab coil - (Coiltek I think) - Ive had it 10 years - and I got it in trade for another detector - hopefully this works(!) - the thing re-boots/shuts off whenever the connection is lost - says he "might be able to look at it on Friday" - (I hope - I have a couple friends coming to detect on Saturday) - I do have the stock coil - (though in fields...especially ones that aren't too trash/iron ridden - I like the huge coil) - but that coil has its own issues with making noise when being bumped - I have an 8-inch coil - which I love - but I mostly reserve that for high trash areas - around cellar holes/etc - out in the middle of a field...its like waving a hockey stick around.....
thanks for all the info/help......Ill report back with results.....

I would still send it to Kellyco's Minelab repair center. It has to be waterproof, any salt water gets in the coil you can kiss coil goodbye...

FYI ....If it leaks it can get sucked up into your controls like water up a straw...

well - I don't use it for water hunting - this looks like a respectable electronics shop - Im sure they will do a pretty good job - the coil itself has gaps in the housing (from so much use)- so - that would probably be more of a concern - but if this fails...Ill consider it - I really need it for this weekend - so - sending it out would be a winter thing......as Im itching to get out(!)

How do you splice this to hardware to an excal?? I can't find anything online. Thanks.
