I was thinking about this while reading over stuff about the new Equinox series.
But when will detectors have built in wifi? And what advantages would that have?
I have a Fujifilm xt-2 that has it’s own wifi and it’s awesome. I can take my camera, and automatically transfer photos to my phone, ipad, computer... whatever.
If I had a detector that was basically a wifi coil, battery, & transmitter i could just use an app on my phone as a vdi or to change settings ect...

However I don’t know the pitfalls, lag of a wifi stream, does wifi suffer like bluetooth underwater, or other pitfalls. What do you guys think?

Funny you should mention this subject because i have been thinking the same thing over the past couple days. I believe smart phones have way more computing power than detectors and a simple app coupled with a coil much like the XP deus would revolutionize the world of detecting. i don't think we will see something like that from any of the current manufactures of detectors because it would likely cut into their profits and control over software or operating systems of the detectors but i can see a startup company jumping in and forcing the change.

X2 !

my phone is a phone -- not a detector.

Your phone is a computer with the ability to do way more than just talk to a friend and a detector is a computer with a fraction of a phones abilities

And it would still be your phone... the only thing it would be doing is running software and being an interface, which is probably more capable of doing than a lot of current detectors are.

Did you know a cell phone can be made into a metal detector?

Can you imagine the buzz in your earphones if you're out with a few other people and they all have the wifi going at the same time?

Can I have my nap now?

There probably wouldn’t be much interference at all. Just like when there is a bunch of wifi signals in a department store or apartment complex, my wifi isn’t slower or weaker because of someone else’s wifi. Everyone has their own dedicated signal.

I believe I saw on the Garrett website, or Kellyco, that their Z-Lynk is faster than Wi-Fi.
It might have something with licensing too. Wi-Fi is a whole new ballgame regulation wise, than the glorified walkie talkie they have now.
Doesn't Minelab have this in the Go-Find?

Go find uses Bluetooth and there is an app you can download to use with the detector but it’s not required.
I was talking about more of a truly wireless set up, similar to the Deus except your cell phone could act as the control box and processor. I could see this being an issue though with constant updates and bug fixes cell phones get, then possibly rendering your detector useless until the company released an update.

Already has the Quest line of metal detectors--look at the Quest Pro. Think one or two of the EFX metal detector brand units has the options.
Not something I would use if added to a detector, just want to detect, not dick around with cellphone apps etc.
