I recently watched a video demonstrating how you are able to increase the depth/sensitivity of a pinpointer by physically placing a coin on the body of the pinpointer, far enough away so that the pinpointer stops reacting to it. The fellow showed how he was able to increase the depth/sensitivity of what the pinpointer could detect by doing a comparison with the coin attached, and then without the coin on the same target.

I'm sure many folks here are familiar with this trick, but how many actually use it in the field? Do you semi-permanently attach a coin to your pinpointer and run it this way full-time in order to utilize this trick? Or is it just a situational technique?

Are there any drawbacks for using this trick?

Before I actually got a good one, I used the trick on a cheap one and it does work. I used a brass nut held on with a ty-wrap.
