I don't do kneepads but I do carry:
Small Shovel
Screwdriver (for digging)
Vibraprobe
Fiberglass probe
For tougher soil I take a true digging pick.

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
I carry a 24 inch shovel, a 6 inch hand tool, Shop rags or hand towel, spare Battery pack,a baseball cap, water bottle, Probe, mag light. hand pick for bottle dumps, bug spray for ticks and flies. Depending were I am going I will carry what I need with me. I think I am going to buy one of the 36inch Texas digging tools I saw in the last Treasure mag. Cladius.

Which pinpointer do you use there bigrig. I got a vibraprobe (haven't used it yet) and just wanted some info on other pinpointers. I made my own out of a proximity sensor (worked great) before the Vibraprobe and would like to make a commercial pinpointer. I think I can do better and cheaper.

Agree with Big Rig, need the trash pouch, always better to leave the area cleaner than when you got there, plus by removing the trash you wont have to find it again

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
Here's my definitive list:
metal detector
probe
Lesche digger (digging tool)
small shovel
nylon square for depositing dug-up soil
carpenter's apron (with a pocket for goodies and a pocket for trash)
yard gloves
knee pads
magnet
handi-wipes
led keychain light (these are nice and bright, plus they're lightweight and small)
pocket knife
magnifying glass
Spare batteries
Water
Sunblock
Insect repellent
Multi-pocket "cargo" pants to put it all in
permission forms/personal liabily waivers for when it's appropriate
I'm sure I'm missing something else. And, of course, you won't want to carry every single item with you, but at least have them ready in your car.

Wow PJB I hope you keep your truck close by with all that gear in it. If you have to back pack it in then I wish I was getting to hunt the treasures your digging for.
As far as your shovel goes make sure it has a serrated edge.It will cut throughthe ground and roots 100% better then not having.
I took a light but Strong shovel and grind ed the teeth in it now I won't hunt without it.

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
Well, most of it is relatively small and wearable, and I don't carry the shovel with me, so I don't ever feel loaded down. Although, I am thinking about buying a CamelBack. Much more convenient that water bottles! http://www.camelbak.com/rec/cb_prod....ID=333&CATID=6

Defiantly get that camel back. I use one with extra pockets for snacks and it works great mainly here in Texas duering the summer.
Wal-Mart even has some good ones and Academy are about priced the same.

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
If you like to hit garage sales you will look through them with a new eye once you are looking for detecting equipment. I found an old carpenter's belt that has two pockets only and you can wear it so it's on your side and doesn't keep getting in the way when you bend down. It's leather and it only cost $1. 1 pocket for trash, one for the goods. I also have a small piece of heavy duty plastic sheeting with a piece of velcro on one corner that I lay the grass plug on so I can catch all the dirt. Seems as though there is never enough dirt to go back in the hole unless you can catch it all on something. The belt has the other half of the velcro so it can be stored easily. Of course there is the garden trowel and the ever handy screw driver as well.

There have been many a treasure buried in river banks but unfortunately the rivers change and they get washed away after a few hundred years.

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
In addition to the basics listed above:
- I always bring my cell phone when I go in areas where I could easily break a leg.
- Food & water are always welcome for those well-deserved breaks.
- A flannel shirt for when it gets cooler.
- A digital camera - mine has a card that takes 637(!) pictures - plus a couple sets of extra batteries.
- A small bottle of the new waterless hand disinfectant, which my druggist says pretty much lives up to its claim of 99% of germs killed. I don't know how much dirt it washes off, but at least its clean dirt.

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
All I carry for outings is a belt pouch, a handheld leshe digger (predator tools handheld digger is basically the same), an electronic handheld pinpointer , kneepads & a little sampson lesche shovel. Anything else i might need like water.... etc. etc. is kept nearby in my vehicle.
I dont detect too far from my vehicle & dont get out in the wilds that much.

Re: what are the essential tools beside the md
Large mesh nylon pouch w/bottom zipper, 10" digging knife that fits in a fish gillet knife sheath, cell phone, extra set of batteries that fit in loops of nylon web belt that's made for shotgun shells. and small neckerchief that doubles as a groundcloth, and a film cannister with cotton balls to protect the really nice coin I find. Don't forget the sheets of P.T. or T.P. for those extended stays in the woods cause leaves just don't cut it.
