    Dumb question from a novice

I wear steel toe boots, is this good or bad while metal detecting? What is the radius of detection around the coil?
I'm guessing steel toes aren't good to wear but was curious if some of the signals I have gotten have been from them instead of something in the ground.

turn on vco on your dfx. in a metal free area raise coil waist level and squeeze pinpoint
and lower to ground.if no metal present s.a.t. should cancel out ground.now note as you bring coil closer to boot.now as long you don,t pump up d.c. sens this should show you
boot to coil range.can you keep in step with the coil? if not chuck the boot.if you are worried about dropping your cannonball finds there are some composite nonsteel toes out there.

    good luck

My workboots are steel-toed and yes they must come off. I carry an old pair of boots or tennis shoes in my truck for just this purpose

Even with my tennis shoes I have made the mistake of getting too close and ding ding, it picks up the little metal shoe lace brads.

There is no such thing as a dumb...the only dumb question is the question that is not asked.

Your question is a very good question. There is even a site that sells

Ultra-Light Water Proof 8 inch high BOOT
    ABSOLUTELY NO METAL HARDWARE
    NO METAL ANYWHERE !

I would say find yourself a good comfortable pair of hiking boots or shoes.

I have a pair of boots that I wear and should start looking for a good pair to use.

Any way welcome to the forum.
And I hope you enjoy your new hobby. I sure do. there are a lot of good forums out here. There are wealth of them to be found

    Again welcome to the forum.

You should be OK with a DFX. There's got to be an "I'm wearing steel toed shoes" selection among those gozillion menu choices.

I wouldn't hunt in All Metal mode with steel toed shoes, though.

Definitely no such thing as a dumb question...I asked this one myself before ...occasionally when I'm passing clumps of soil underneath my coil by hand I forget about my watch

I'd agree. Leave the steel toes at home but do wear shoes of some kind, even on the beach.

Last year I pulled out a 4 inch carp hook with multiple prongs that was only 1/2 inch into the sand. It wouldn't have taken much for someone to step on that thing and rip their foot to shreds.

You need to consider things like snakes, bees, mean dogs and
angry property owners , so I would recommend wearing your best
    running shoes when metal detecting

i ware steel toe boots and dont have a problem with them,, if you keep the coil out where it should be its fine,, and if you think you have detected them stand back and sweep the ground spot again, if nothing there you know you hit the boot,, i dont have that problem often with my boots, and most of the time there discrimed out anyway.
