pin pointing with a knitting needle

my mxt - fine machine that it is becomes a little tricky sometimes when pin pointing the target. i have found that a knitting needle 5mm and 14 inches long works real well. instead of going through the whole routine as per manual - when you see the lowest number for inches on the meter just jab the needle into the center of the 950 coil - just enough for the needle to stick in the ground - raise the head and move it away a few inches - take out your regular probe and you will find the coin etc. real close to the plastic needle. the plastic needle doesn't cause the machine to overload. it works for me! wayne

A knitting needle will work but a coin probe with a rounded end (brass) will not damage coins and is a lot easier on the hands. I lift my coil off of the ground and pinpoint sometimes because it narrows the target and makes pinpointing much easier. I also have found that different machines and different coils have a different electronic center so once you become acquainted with your detector and coil it gets much easier.
