Mountain Bike to Targets ???

I used to be an avid MTN biker - i am talking mountain BICYCLE no motor - last winter - i enjoyed several cold trips out in the country - now i have found this hobby metal detecting - being that gas is dam near 2.50 a gallon and some places i hate leaving my car - because parking seems to be far from the actual hunting spot - has anyone ever used a mtn bike to get to the areas ? i think i will try this - it will take the factor of gas money and worrying about somebody breaking in when i am 50-60 yards away in the woods - plus i will get to do 2 things i love - i have used it for fishing and hunting - why not md'ing and if i have a crappy day hunting i will have a great day riding - LBP - for the record - one trip i went on last winter - i found a cd that played (religous music must have been a sign , a new raquet ball , 2 holders for downspout , and found out the beer of choice in the area is natty light) i wasnt even looking that hard - :P

thanks - i have this one place that has a gate with a very small place to park and its always locked - not safe - the cops already checked me out and the lot is a complete disaster - i found about 10 pennies (all newer) just in the cracks and grass in its old parking lot. but didnt hit the grass too hard because of the parking situation ...... i will try it one of these days - LBP - the meth tweekers are everywhere around here - they r stealing everything -

LOL.? Does anyone have any creative ideas on how to bike with a detector?? I have a bounty hunter tracker 4 so it doesnt break down that small.....

i am going to use a strap from my 22 rifle and a backpack - carrying only 2 shovels and my blade -
backpack will have 2 granola bars , 2 waters and my cell phone - it may be uncomfortable until i fugure it out - w/twin water bottle holders something will be worked out - lbp

? ? ? ?Not sure how it would work while pedaling. But on my motorcycle i have mine in a detector bag with a strap from end to end, and wear it like a bow and arrow set up. With detector on my back and the strap over one shoulder and across my chest. Works at 70 mph ?anyway. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? HH

If you have a soft detector bag like mine, you might want to pad the detector with a shirt or something. Because the first time or two and the longer i went, the more the corners and various other parts of the detector always seemed to find those tender little spots in my back. HH

LBP -- I just ordered my 250 and should have it Wednesday -- how small does it break down? This is a great idea, most everyone should have good sites within biking distance.

hey i mountain bike as well and thought of doing the same thing too,think it will work just fine . packing my gear is the only problem.

I don't know if this will work for you, but whenever I have been to the carribean on vacation, I always carry my backpack. I have a decent sized camelbak that has the "bungee" type para-cord on the outside, along with a few of the military style MOLLE or ALICE straps. I would take my Surfmaster PI, and with 2 velcro straps on each side of the pack, I'd the detector to the sides of the pack. The coil would be just behind my right shoulder, with the rod pointing down, and the detector would be on my left side, with the box up.

you might want to try a similar setup. It was very stable, and didn't sway or bounce much, especially with the pack on tight. And, it was very easy to take on and off. That setup has been to remote beaches in Aruba, Dominica, Barbados, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Antiqua, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

I was able to breakdown the 250 so that it would fit in a larger camelbak. The coil and housing were wrapped and padded so they wouldn't bounce, the tubes were just short enough to fit w/ out stretching the fabric. Throw a fleece or windbreaker in there to fill out the pack. There are a couple of old homesteads that I like to check out, but it's at least a 6-7 mile walk from the car.
