New to Metal Detecting

Never used a metal detector before, and ordered a Vaquero last week... be prepared for me to 'pester' anyone willing to respond to my posts. Have already 'secured' over 300 acres in various areas around Wisconsin to hunt (besides my own backyard)... plus a 2-week vacation to CO and OK at the end of May, which I will bring the detector along. Hopefully I have sometime to practice with it before then!

Read the manual over and over.Get you some practice in that yard.If you want to since you are new, set the disc higher,a hair past tab so you can get the feel for pinpointing and locating coins to start off with.Then as you get better,turn the disc down to find more jewelry.Nice detector! O:-)

I agree with most of this post. I think at first you should set the disc low and dig everything, so you can learn the V's language. At first every beep will sound the same but as you practice and dig good and bad signals you will learn what the V is saying. After you learn what a good or bad signal is you should be good to go. Also watch the second video that terry posted a few times. It is a good example of how to GB.

You will enjoy the line of detectors that tesoro has to offer. Especially the vaquero. Their H.O.T. circuitry is phenomenal. When I relic hunt I set it just below iron and dig everything with a clean repeatable signal. Once you have gotten comfortable with it you can tell what your going to dig up before you even put the shovel to the ground.

Good point I didn't think of that being a reason to set the disc high. I guess I was just to stubborn to give up on something that I just spend a few hundred bucks on when I first started, no matter how discouraged I got.

Appreciate all of the tips and suggestions... and I was finally was able to get out over the last couple of weekends and 'play' around with the detector. I generally started with the disc just below a nickel (to ensure I am not missing any money LOL), and have completed roughly 10% (or less) of my yard. I hit most of the major traffic routes, between house and garage, and along 1 road. As I am on a corner lot, have another 150 feet of road to go!

Not that I am getting rich, I have found 0.63 (1 quarter, 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 18 pennies) for coins. I have also found an old brass key, a metal plane toy (no wings), an old toothpaste tube, a lid for a pot, and an old cast iron leg. The most interesting item (i believe) found thus far, is a rock that will sound off at the highest level. Anyone have thoughts on what this could be/mean? Or is this not as unusual as it seems to me?

I agree set the disc high and cherry pick coins until you get a feel for the machine and its sounds, then set it lower and it will be easier to tell what is trash after hearing all those sweet coins sounds. I think most people do this backwards. Instant success will keep one motivate even if it is only a zinc penny.

MOST IMPORTANT- Learn how dig a proper plug, put any removed dirt on drop cloth, leave the re-inserted plug so that nobody know you were there. This way it doesn't ruin it for the rest of us.

Rainyday101 - appreciate the comment about the drop cloth... which makes a lot of sense to make it easier vs. scrapping the dirt back into the hole. I have done all my digging thus far in my yard... and replace the plugs (similar to the divots when I am golfing!) The 2 things I need to buy are headphones and a good digging tool (currently using a shovel.) However, you cannot see the areas that I have dug so far, so I try to be cognizant of the holes I dig... PLUS, I don't want to run over all of these 'potholes' while mowing the lawn!

ALready learing some of the sounds... a neighbor stopped over when I was out and asked if he could look/try. Once he hit a spot, I started to turn up the disc and told him it was a penny, which he was a little skeptical of. After diggin down about 2 inches, turned a penny... impressed the he** out of him!
