I would say the 5.75 for him. They are easiest to pinpoint with and good in tight places like yards and sidewalks. The 8" coil gives more coverage and depth and may be a good 2nd machine if you get bit by the bug! If you really get bit look at the Outlaw! Best value to be had with 3 coil option! Also I would highly recommend a pinpointer. It makes target recovery much easier. Good luck and have a great time with your son! (I have 3 daughters!)

I concur with Fletch. Hard to beat the Compadre for the price - not a bad detector for the casual hunter and a great addition as an extra or backup for the more serious detectorist.

For an eight-year-old, the smaller coil should be easier to
handle.

5.75.....my 8 year old has one and does very well with it for the reasons mentioned above. Super light also....and excellent battery life.

So, is it correct to assume the 8" coil will give more depth?

Just remember speration is important too. A small coil will generally give better speration on smaller targets , like gold items.

Like Hobo says! Small coils can be a great advantage. The smaller coil is what helped the Compadre get it's reputation for small (especially gold) jewelry.

I've said that many times myself. No surprises, it just does what it is supposed to do!

The only improvement I would make on this little machine is the hard wired coil. Kinda a hassle when I want to use it. To go from my 8year olds length to mine. Because of the lack of slack in cable I have to take coil bolt loose. Still best $150 machine ever made!
