So I broke my second hand Tejon. Send it in or can I fix it?

I bought a used Tejon on Ebay a couple of months ago with plans to use it for relic hunting CW camp sites on my in-laws property. I spent some time practicing with it at home and was VERY impressed with it. I found several targets in my yard that I had not located with my AT gold. I took the Tejon with me to the CW camp last week, and was having a pretty good hunt with it. I found several mini balls, buttons, etc. At some point while going through a cane thicket I hung the head phone cord on some cane and pulled the head phone jack out of the Tejon. I noticed immediately that my headphones would not work so when I unplugged them, and tried to use the machine, it wouldn't work without the headphones either. The headphone jack didn't come completely out of the Tejon, but it was just hanging there. I was able to screw it back into the machine, but still no luck.

Since I bought the machine second hand, I know this won't be covered by warranty, and I don't know if it would be any way since it was my fault it broke. What I am wondering is, can I open the machine and just plug in some wire that came lose or reconnect something, or do I need to send it back to Tesoro? I hate to spend a bunch of money getting it fixed if it is something simple that I can do myself, but I don't know how difficult the repair would be. Have any of you ever tried to repair a machine yourself? Any idea what Tesoro charges for repairs if the machine is not under warranty? Thanks in advance.

Won't know till you try. Since it is not under warranty what do you have to lose? Worse comes to worse, you send it in anyway.

Sarge, it could be a simple fix you can do yourself, depending on your experience with soldering / repairing electronics.
Be sure to take precautions against static by grounding yourself and the circuit board, before touching the insides...

Since you're not the original owner, I think Tesoro will charge you $50 plus the repair part(s) cost. For that $50 + parts, they'll make sure it's working properly and ship back to you. Might be worthwhile just to send it to them right off. Send Allen or Rusty an email and ask what to do. They'll take good care of you. ^_^

It would heal GREATLY if you could take the cover off, snap a pic or two and post them here. Then we can get a better idea of what's happened and what needs to be done.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I am going to take the cover off of the machine and just take a peek inside. I am hoping there is a simple fix that I can do myself, but if not it will be going back to Tesoro. Thanks again.

Sarge if you can just remove batteries and then take cover off and examine the wires from the jack to board and vice versa. I had to repair mine on my old vaquero. Pretty straightforward fix as long as you didn't rip the solder strip off the board. My experience with tesoro is if the original owner didn't register it and it had a open warranty card then they never charged me for repairs so you'd just have to ask
