While visiting my daughter last weekend, I went to a thrift store that blew me away! They had more antique furniture than some antique shops. I picked up these four chairs and a print that was taken from a county atlas from Quebec from 1881. I'm looking for help to ID the type and approximate age of these to resell. The first I believe is a Comb Back Windsor from around 1800. The rockers have been worn flat and it had a cracked arm that was repaired. The next is the cool little green rocker. I love the canoe like rockers and the great paint. I'm believing it was made in the late 1800s. How would you describe it? The third one was described as 1860-1880 Boudoir Chair. I believe that the seat has been recovered at least once. The last is a Bow front Hitchcock with great paint and original finish. The print is " The Residence of O.H. Martin Esq. Barnston Tp. Stanstead Quebec and thanks to DC Matts ID came from a Quebec County Atlas from 1881. I have less than $175 in all of them. Any help or corrections of my IDs is greatly appreciated.

I think they are all newer than 1900. The rocker is definitely not an early 1800s Windsor.

The rocker has a single board seat that is hand planed on the bottom and hewed out for your butt. The legs are pegged into the rockers, spindles continue through back and back is pegged through the uprights. No nails or screws anywhere in construction. No nails or screws in any of the chairs. All are wood pegged. The Hitchcock is the only one that I think might be newer than 1900.

I'm a sucker for old chairs. Those are beautiful and you should do well reselling them. Look at the wear on on the bottom of that comb back chair. Someone sure loved sitting in that one. I wish I knew more about them. Good luck on your research! So where is that thrift store:) Just kidding!

I have an old chair addiction. I have way too many for the house. My oldest is a Spanish Colonial {appraised by professional} 1675-1725 that was from the landfill when i worked there. A regular customer sat it in the back of my truck along with 3 Empire side chairs. I was living & working in an antique shop when i met my wife in 1980 and still have my Tennesee 1870s rocker and Empire sofa attributed to Thomas Day from that shop.

The warden said, hey, buddy, don't you be no square
If you can't find a partner, use a wooden chair.

Those are awesome finds. As an early chair and furniture collector myself, I’d put the comb back chair to about 1830’s-1850’s. It’s a bit to boxy on top for a federal period piece. A freakin awesome chair non the less!!
